As a seasoned League of Legends enthusiast with over a decade of gaming under my belt, I must say that the recent announcement of Project K has me utterly thrilled! While LoR has been a fantastic addition to the Riot Games family, it’s always refreshing to see new takes on our beloved universe.

Riot has recently revealed a new trading card game based on League of Legends, codenamed Project K. This freshly disclosed card game appears to draw some influence from Riot’s other card game, Legends of Runeterra.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve been hooked on Legends of Runeterra since it launched back in 2020. Despite not matching the commercial heights of League of Legends, this game has earned critical acclaim for its smooth progression system and faithful adaptation of the LoL lore. It’s been a delight to see it grow over time, with 11 expansions under its belt so far, the most recent being Dreamlit Paths in April 2024.

Approximately eight months after the initial reveal, Riot unveiled a fresh Trading Card Game under the title of “Project K“. On December 6, this new venture was officially announced with a four-minute video. Although it’s distinct from the physical version of “Legends of Runeterra“, both share similar “champion design philosophies”, as stated by Riot. Moreover, some artwork from “Legends of Runeterra” will be reused in “Project K“. The game appears to maintain the card description format utilized in “LoR“, which leans towards first-person phrasing. For example, the Yasuo card description reads: “When I attack, deal damage equal to my Might to an enemy here.” In this regard, “Project K” differs from “Magic: The Gathering“, which traditionally employs a third-person template.

Project K Promises Varied Champion Themes

Regarding the topic of champions, Riot shared a summary of several theme ideas for Project K decks they’ve developed. For instance, Viktor decks typically focus on amassing numerous minions and enhancing their power to overpower opponents. In contrast, Volibear from League of Legends tends to play aggressively by attempting to outmuscle everyone head-on. Alternatively, if you’re interested in speed decks, Jinx could be the choice for you as she temporarily boosts her attack power each time a card is discarded.

While it allows single combat, Project K is chiefly structured for team battles (2v2) and free-for-all modes, which can become significantly more intense. According to game director Dave Guskin, “We believe we’ve crafted the top social Trading Card Game available.

We think we’ve created the best social TCG out there.

New League of Legends TCG Is Targeting a 2025 Release

Project K, scheduled for launch in 2025, will initially be rolled out in stages, beginning with China next year as its first market. Despite securing a distribution partner in China, Riot is still seeking one within the United States. Potential partners could include publishers like Wizards of the Coast (known for publishing Magic: The Gathering), but there are other American companies capable of mass-producing Trading Card Games as well.
