Leaked Details: EA Axes Secret Titanfall Game, Respawn Suffers Major Layoffs!

Summary

  • EA canceled an unannounced Titanfall extraction shooter project from Respawn Entertainment, codenamed “R7.”
  • The extraction shooter is one of two “early-stage incubation projects” that were in the works at Respawn.
  • 100 staffers from Respawn were also laid off in EA’s recent round of layoffs, which affected 300 to 400 staffers in total.

Among EA’s terminated projects was allegedly a fresh extraction shooter within the universe of Titanfall, developed by Respawn Entertainment. Unfortunately, Respawn Entertainment, known for creating Titanfall and Apex Legends, experienced significant downsizing as part of EA’s recent layoffs, resulting in around 100 team members being let go from their studio.

On April 29th, Respawn Entertainment announced the termination of two unannounced games that were in their early stages of development. This decision resulted in job losses affecting around 300 to 400 employees across Electronic Arts (EA), including 100 from Respawn itself. The layoffs were characterized as strategic adjustments within EA’s Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi teams.

Interestingly, a former employee’s LinkedIn profile from March 2025 hinted at an undisclosed multiplayer first-person shooter project by Respawn. After the announcement of these layoffs and game cancellations, more details about this first-person shooter have emerged in recent reports.

A surprise Titanfall extraction shooter from Respawn, code-named “R7,” was one of the abandoned projects, as per a recent report by Jason Schreier at Bloomberg. The game was still in its early stages, referred to as an incubation phase, and thus, not yet complete. Additional information about this canceled Titanfall project remains undisclosed. However, had it been released, it might have rivaled Bungie’s upcoming extraction shooter Marathon, slated for release on September 23 of this year.

EA Cancels New Titanfall Extraction Shooter from Respawn Entertainment

Respawn is aiding ex-employees who were let go, offering them potential positions within Electronic Arts (EA), as stated by the company. Although the cancellation of the Titanfall extraction shooter project, both the Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi teams will carry on their tasks. This includes creating new seasonal content for Apex Legends and moving forward with “the next installment of the Star Wars Jedi series.” The sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Survivor was initially announced in September 2023.

As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that at least three exciting endeavors are brewing at Respawn Entertainment post the termination of the Titanfall extraction shooter. One of these projects is none other than Apex Legends, which continues to evolve as Respawn works tirelessly on seasonal updates and a comprehensive overhaul of the game.

Additionally, alongside the Star Wars Jedi: Survivor sequel, Respawn is lending their expertise to the development team of Lucasfilm Games and Bit Reactor. This collaboration has given birth to an intriguing single-player turn-based Star Wars strategy game, recently unveiled as Star Wars: Zero Company. This game takes place during the twilight years of the Clone Wars, offering players a unique perspective on the story of Hawks, a former Republic officer commanding the unorthodox unit known as Zero Company.
