Leaked Discord Messages Reveal Why Rockstar Fired 34 Employees

Layoffs at Rockstar Games have been a major story in the gaming world recently. A new report has now surfaced, showing Discord conversations that reportedly caused 34 employees to lose their jobs.

Back in October, TopMob reported that workers on GTA 6 were allegedly fired because they were trying to form a union. Rockstar Games responded by saying these employees were terminated for leaking confidential information. Since then, there have been protests and the company is now facing legal challenges related to these firings.

Recent discoveries appear to have revealed the original Discord messages that started it all.

Rockstar Games Allegedly Accessed Union Discord Server

On November 24th, People Make Games published a revealing video about why Rockstar Games fired 34 union members, titled “The Messages Rockstar Saw Before Firing 34 Union Members.”

So, a reporter at People Make Games talked to someone on the inside at Rockstar, and they showed them screenshots of Discord messages. Apparently, these messages were sent just a few weeks before 34 people were let go, and the insider believes they were directly responsible for those firings. What’s even more interesting is that they also know how Rockstar actually got their hands on these messages!

People Make Games reports the information didn’t come from anyone who was laid off, nor is it from a member of the union. The source is a Discord server that’s been active since 2022, made up of different employees at Rockstar.

According to a source, no confidential details about their games were ever shared. Rockstar Games reportedly updated its Slack policies—the messaging app employees use—around the beginning of October 2025.

The company deleted several unnecessary chat conversations, stating they were disruptive and led to inappropriate behavior.

The decision to remove Slack access was met with strong disapproval. Members of the union’s Discord server voiced their concerns, with one person questioning the reasoning behind the change. They asked for proof that Slack was actually harming productivity, adding that the move would likely cause a significant drop in team morale.

Rockstar reportedly sent an email about changes to their Slack policies after 5 PM. Because employees can’t access their email outside of work hours, a follow-up email detailing the new guidelines and expected conduct was also sent. Those still at the office then shared the emails on Discord to make sure everyone was informed.

So, someone on our Discord server actually reached out to the studio heads because they were worried about what we were all talking about. Apparently, that either started or helped along an official company investigation into the Discord server itself, which makes sense considering when everything went down. It’s a bit crazy to think our conversations led to that, honestly.

According to the report, Rockstar likely gained access to the Discord server used by the union. Shortly after, news of the layoffs became public. Rockstar apparently used the chat logs to identify employees who had violated company rules, possibly linking them to the leaks that occurred.
