Okay, so I’m hearing some interesting stuff about that potential God of War Metroidvania game. Apparently, it might not be a PlayStation exclusive after all! With the Amazon TV show getting some big casting news and rumors of two God of War games in the works, it sounds like one of them could actually come to more than just the PS5. That’s huge if true – I’d love to play it on other consoles!
Although Sony and Santa Monica Studio haven’t officially announced any new God of War games, several reports suggest that more are in development. With over three years having passed since Ragnarok’s release, fans are anticipating a new main installment soon. While the story in Norse mythology seems complete, rumors point to the next God of War game drawing inspiration from Egyptian mythology. Additionally, there’s talk of a return to Greece with a 2.5D spin-off game that could be significant for reasons beyond just its different style.
God of War Metroidvania Spin-Off May Get a Multiplatform Release
Rumors are swirling that a new God of War game – potentially a 2.5D Metroidvania style title – could be coming to Nintendo’s Switch 2. These rumors have been circulating since mid-2025, and are now gaining traction thanks to multiple sources. Leaker Nash Weedle first suggested the Switch 2 release on February 10th, and Nate The Hate, a highly reliable source, confirmed he’d heard similar information. While Nate The Hate didn’t definitively state the game would be on Switch 2, he did mention the God of War team had discussed releasing the game on multiple platforms, making a Switch 2 version seem more plausible.

Nate The Hate didn’t say which consoles might get this new game, but Nash Weedle’s prediction about the Switch 2 seems logical. While some major games have been released on the Switch, it’s not as powerful as the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X. Releasing a 2.5D version of God of War could be a way for Santa Monica Studio to see how the game performs on that platform. An Xbox release is also a possibility. The game could also come to PC, as the last two God of War titles were released on Steam, but the rumors about multiple platforms probably refer to consoles, which would be a significant change for the series.
Neither Nash Weedle nor Nate The Hate shared any new information about the potential release date of the rumored God of War spin-off. However, past leaks suggest it might arrive in 2026. Initial reports pointed to a 2025 release to coincide with the franchise’s 20th anniversary, but a later insider claimed the game was pushed back. Since 2025 has passed, a release—or at least an announcement—could still happen in 2026.
Image via Santa Monica Studio We might find out this week if Santa Monica Studio is working on a new 2.5D Metroidvania game. Rumors suggest the God of War spin-off could be revealed at the State of Play event on February 12th. Announcing the game now would fit with plans for a 2026 release. However, as with all leaks, it’s best to wait for official confirmation.
