With the release of LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight just around the corner, fans can also enjoy a special comic book called The LEGO Batman Returns. This standalone story will both introduce LEGO Batman and celebrate the character’s history, giving players a sneak peek of what to expect in the game when it launches on May 22nd.
Today, March 30th, is a special day for Batman fans! It’s the anniversary of his very first appearance in Detective Comics #27 back in 1939. To celebrate both this milestone and the upcoming release of LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, Warner Bros. Games, TT Games, DC, and The LEGO Group are releasing a limited-edition comic book called The LEGO Batman Returns. This comic will tie into the game’s story and also pay tribute to classic Batman movies, TV shows, and comics.
Free LEGO Batman Comic Book Coming on May 2
LEGO Batman Returns is a special comic book that follows LEGO Batman as he comes back to Gotham City and meets other DC characters. It will be given away for free at comic book stores on May 2nd for Free Comic Book Day. The comic is written by Ivan Cohen (known for Beware the Batman) and illustrated by Paul Lee (who worked on Batman: Under the Hood). It combines the stories and art style of DC Comics with LEGO’s signature humor. The first panel even recreates the famous image of Batman swinging over Gotham, mirroring the cover of the very first Batman comic.

If you can’t get a physical copy, The LEGO Batman Returns will be available for free digitally on May 2nd through the DC UNIVERSE INFINITE app. While it’s unclear if the comic contains spoilers for LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, the story is self-contained, making it a good read for players wanting to get acquainted with this LEGO version of Batman before the game comes out. LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is a brand-new adventure following Bruce Wayne’s path to becoming Gotham’s hero, and it launches on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on May 22nd, with a Nintendo Switch version planned for sometime in 2026.
Alongside the comic book, four new LEGO DC Batman sets have been released. Each set comes with special digital content you can unlock in the LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight video game, like a unique gold Batsuit and different versions of the Batmobile you can play with. These features are only available by buying the LEGO sets, so if you want them when the game comes out in May, you’ll need to plan ahead and get the sets you want.
As a big Batman fan, I’ve played a lot of the games over the years, and I’m really excited about LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight. It seems like it’s trying to give us the best of everything – fun combat, a huge world to explore, and a lighthearted sense of humor. From what I’ve heard, it’s going to include stuff that comic book fans will love, but also feel familiar to anyone who enjoyed the Arkham games. Both LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight and the tie-in, The LEGO Batman Returns, seem like they’re going to be a great way to experience the Caped Crusader all over again!
