At Gamescom 2025, the unveiling of LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight was undoubtedly one of the most significant highlights. Lucky for us, TopMob got to test a sneak peek version of the upcoming LEGO Batman game during the event. Here’s our initial take on the preview build.
At Opening Night Live, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight captivated audiences, offering a fresh perspective on the Caped Crusader by blending iconic scenes from both his movie and comic book worlds with the distinctive LEGO style.
It’s Arkham, But in LEGO
At Gamescom, the trial version offered players the opportunity to assume the identities of both Batman and Commissioner Gordon. Their mission involved collaborating to combat crime within Gotham City. Each character had distinct functional skills: Batman excelled in close-quarter combat, while Gordon was proficient in long-range attacks.
In this game, every character boasts their own distinct combat and mobility techniques. Each character possesses two additional abilities: Batman wields a batarang for stunning opponents and a batclaw for grappling them, while Gordon carries dual guns – one firing pellets and the other causing enemies to stick into molds. The game also introduces various gadgets that assist in puzzle-solving; we’re eagerly waiting to witness these tools in action.
As a die-hard gamer, I’d say the combat in this game is heavily influenced by the Arkham series. You’ll find an array of distinct takedowns, stealth mechanics, and a dodge ability that allows for some incredible acrobatics over opponents. The city is teeming with endless hordes of lawbreakers, creating chaotic situations where you’re often outnumbered. This isn’t your typical police work; it’s every man for himself in the heart of the city!
In a preliminary version, the gameplay feels robust, with the developers excelling in refining the combat and movement systems, making it feel like you’re truly stepping into the role of Batman.
LEGO Gotham City is the Place to Be
TT Games has skillfully reproduced the atmosphere of Gotham City, with its brooding and rough ambiance perfectly captured. Players have several options for moving around the metropolis, such as batmobiles, gliding, or using batclaws, among others. Similarly to the Arkham series, players can hover over rooftops, use a focus bar to gather speed, and seamlessly shift into a glide to examine the city from above.
As a devoted fan, I must say that the game’s world is nothing short of breathtaking! It’s not just about recognizable landmarks from the comics and films, but it also offers a rich tapestry of intriguing puzzles hidden throughout the city. Even when I’m not engaged in the story mode, there’s always something to keep me occupied and immersed in this captivating universe.
Final Thoughts
So far, the game appears well-made, with engaging gameplay and exploration that leaves me eager for more. The future success of the game depends largely on how TT Games handle the storyline, various levels, and characters in the final version. Given their current progress, the game shows great promise and has a lot of potential.
