LEGO Fan Makes Their Own Project Hail Mary Set That’s Better Than the Official Release

A dedicated LEGO builder created their own incredible model of Project Hail Mary using pieces they already had, and it’s just as impressive as the official set. Rumors about the official LEGO set first appeared in late 2025, which thrilled many fans. LEGO then announced it would be released on March 1, 2026, shortly before the movie premiered on March 20. While the official set has some cool features, one fan decided to build their own version to recreate the story’s characters.

Based on Andy Weir’s 2021 novel (also the author of The Martian), Project Hail Mary is an action-packed science fiction story now available as a LEGO set. The set, part of LEGO’s collection for adult builders, includes a detailed model of the Hail Mary spaceship, a buildable figure of the alien companion Rocky, and Ryan Gosling’s first-ever LEGO minifigure. With 830 pieces, the official set retails for $99.99, but one fan took on the challenge of creating their own version.

LEGO Fan Builds Project Hail Mary Set with Spare Parts

A Reddit user named MessageFlat2157 built their own version of the Project Hail Mary spaceship out of LEGO parts they already had, because the official set was too pricey. They included custom minifigures of Ryan Gosling and Eva Stratt (played by Sandra Hüller), plus a miniature Rocky build. The model even features a small version of the Hail Mary ship itself. Other LEGO fans were impressed with the builder’s attention to detail – Gosling’s figure, for example, has a wrench and wears red astronaut pants, mirroring the official set, and the spacecraft is posed just like it is in the movie.

The key difference between the fan-made LEGO set by MessageFlat2157 and the official set is the inclusion of the character Eva Stratt, who isn’t in the official version. The fan created her minifigure using a head from the LEGO Avatar set and red hair from a LEGO truck set. The fan’s version of Ryan Gosling also includes a T-shirt, matching his look in the movie, using a spare torso piece from LEGO’s Collectible Minifigures Series 20. MessageFlat2157’s set has received over 2,800 upvotes, with many commenters saying they like it better than the official LEGO set. In contrast, the official Project Hail Mary set features a rotating ship powered by a crank, which mimics the concept of artificial gravity.

Fans have repeatedly impressed with their creativity when building with LEGO. For example, one fan spent a year constructing a custom Millennium Falcon entirely from spare pieces. Another builder, known as Minute_Food_2881, is famous for creating Star Wars models using LEGO parts from completely different sets. This highlights a key part of LEGO’s appeal: the freedom for fans to build anything they can dream up.

March brought the exciting Project Hail Mary LEGO set, along with the debut of LEGO Smart Play bricks. LEGO has even more planned for the future! On April 1st, they’ll release a Star Wars New Republic X-Wing Starfighter set, and there’s talk that a Toy Story 5 set might also come out that day. It will be fun to see which other new movies get their own LEGO versions.
