As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that the announcement of LEGO Horizon Adventures has me positively thrilled! The prospect of exploring the post-apocalyptic world of Horizon Zero Dawn in LEGO form is simply too enticing to resist. The reveal of new playable characters like Teersa, Erend, and even Sylens adds an exciting layer to the game that I can’t wait to dive into.
In Sony’s September 2024 State of Play event, LEGO Horizon Adventures was one of the new projects and updates showcased for existing ones. During the presentation, they released a third promotional video for the upcoming LEGO game, and officially announced its release date as November 14 this year. The trailer indicated that those who pre-order the Digital Deluxe Edition of LEGO Horizon Adventures would gain access to a Nora roller coaster customization, a Banuk Armor Outfit, a Shield-Weaver Outfit, and additional items. Moreover, it seems as though the new trailer hinted at several new playable characters that gamers can experiment with this upcoming holiday season, alongside new cosmetic items and Mother’s Heart.
LEGO Horizon Adventures’ Initial Playable Characters
Initially revealed in June, the official announcement of LEGO Horizon Adventures introduced two trailers demonstrating the LEGO-style depiction of a post-apocalyptic American West and its inhabitants. The iconic mechanical animals from Horizon, now in playful LEGO forms, were joined by some of Horizon‘s well-known human characters. Notably, Aloy appeared as the primary playable character in her LEGO form, but she won’t embark on this adventure alone. Accompanying her is Varl, a member of the Nora tribe, who will be the first cooperative player in Horizon. This marks a new milestone for the series as LEGO Horizon Adventures will introduce both local and online multiplayer for the first time.
In the first previews for Horizon Adventures, it wasn’t just Aloy and Varl who were shown as playable characters. An additional character from the Nora tribe, Teersa, can team up with Aloy in this LEGO-style interpretation of Horizon Zero Dawn. Known as a High Matriarch among the Nora, Teersa was one of the few who showed kindness to Aloy throughout her life. In addition to Teersa, players will have the opportunity to embody both Teersa’s comedic counterpart from the Oseram tribe and Erend, a member of the Carja Vanguard, in LEGO Horizon Adventures. Alongside Varl, Erend is one of Aloy’s closest friends and allies.
More Playable Characters in LEGO Horizon Adventures
The recently released trailer for Horizon Adventures showcases some fresh cosmetic choices for Aloy and her companions, featuring Ratchet and Sackboy attires among others. It might also hint at a few additional playable characters in the game. Approximately halfway through the video, there’s a scene where Aloy, Varl, Teersa, Erend, and Sylens are seen gathered together, appearing to celebrate a recently devised strategy. Since four out of these five have already been revealed as playable characters, it could be reasonable to anticipate that Sylens will be added to the roster as the fifth character or one that becomes accessible later in the game.
In the game Horizon Zero Dawn, Sylens didn’t have many direct interactions with Aloy, but it’s possible that Guerrilla Games and Studio Gobo might modify parts of the story to let players control Sylens for various instances. The trailer also displayed an “Alloy” version of Aloy, along with other Aloys dressed as Ratchet, Rivet, and Sackboy. This could suggest that gamers might be able to control multiple Aloy characters at once if they wear different costumes. Notably, these outfits aren’t exclusive to specific characters, as Erend was seen briefly wearing the Ratchet outfit in the trailer.
Potential Playable Characters in LEGO Horizon Adventures
In contrast to LEGO Horizon Adventures being developed by TT Games, who have traditionally created LEGO’s main games, it’s possible that some of their characteristic mechanics, such as how characters are found and unlocked, might be incorporated into this new game. In the past, characters in these games could be purchased or unlocked after completing certain levels, with both enemies and NPCs becoming playable. It’s speculated that Guerrilla and Studio Gobo may adopt a similar system for LEGO Horizon Adventures, allowing players to eventually control characters like Sun-King Avad, Helis, Rost, and Teb, who have appeared in the trailers for this game. If LEGO Horizon Adventures does follow a format similar to TT’s LEGO games, it’s possible that every character within the game could become playable eventually.
The upcoming game, LEGO Horizon Adventures, will mark the fifth installment in the Horizon series, following titles such as Horizon Zero Dawn, Forbidden West, Call of the Mountain, and the remastered version of Zero Dawn.
