LEGO had a fantastic year with incredible sets, including a playable arcade machine and a huge replica of the Baratie restaurant from One Piece. Although many of their 2025 releases were pricey, one of my personal favorites is surprisingly affordable for a LEGO set, making it a great gift for anyone who loves video games.
The LEGO Game Boy set might look simple, but it’s cleverly designed and shows LEGO’s strengths. It includes movable buttons like a real Game Boy and extra details that make it a great display piece. While it would be amazing if it actually worked, this set still offers excellent value for its price.
LEGO Game Boy is a Perfect Nintendo Collaboration
Earlier this year, LEGO surprised everyone by announcing a collaboration with Nintendo. LEGO usually gives hints about new products through leaks or official registrations, but this time they revealed the partnership unexpectedly. When the LEGO Game Boy set was first announced, we didn’t know how detailed it would be, and some gamers were hoping for a fully working version.
I was so excited when LEGO finally showed off the Game Boy set in July, and it really didn’t disappoint! It’s amazing – it comes with LEGO versions of two classic game cartridges: Super Mario Land and The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. You can choose to display them separately or pop one inside the Game Boy itself. And there’s even a little stand to show off the cartridge you’re not currently using with the console, which is a really neat touch.
The LEGO Game Boy set is already pretty awesome, but its price is what really stands out. At just $59.99 (as of today), it’s much more affordable than many other LEGO sets released this year – several popular options cost $100 or more. For example, the LEGO Legend of Zelda Deku Tree set costs $299! That makes the LEGO Game Boy a fantastic gift idea for any adult gamer.
Hands-On With the LEGO Game Boy Set
From afar, the LEGO Game Boy looked great, but it’s even more impressive when you start building it. Despite being covered by the outer shell, the set includes many small pieces designed to look like the Game Boy’s inner workings. I always love the attention to detail in well-made LEGO sets, especially in hidden areas. The LEGO Avengers Tower has plenty of it, as you’d expect for its price, but the Game Boy manages to achieve a similar level of detail for much less money, which is really remarkable.
The LEGO Game Boy is incredibly detailed, right down to the outside. The directional pad moves, the buttons have a good, soft feel, and even the power switch slides on and off. The pause and select buttons are nicely raised, too. It also includes two special, holographic stickers that make the screen look like it’s lit up. Plus, you can insert either of the included LEGO game cartridges into the back, and it clicks securely into place – it’s really satisfying!
If you grew up with a Game Boy, this LEGO set will bring back a lot of good memories. LEGO sets often have amazing detail, but usually that’s on the bigger, more expensive ones. This set is surprisingly detailed for its price – at around $60, it’s a great value for gamers and won’t cost a fortune.
