To see these two worlds collide is a delight that I never thought I’d experience.

LEGO has just unveiled an authentic set inspired by Disney’s beloved film, The Nightmare Before Christmas. This exciting news has sparked joy among fans of the timeless movie. As this new set marks LEGO’s ongoing collaboration with Disney, enthusiasts of LEGO games are eagerly anticipating further announcements.

Disney and LEGO share a robust collaboration, producing sets inspired by various beloved Disney films. The most recent creation emerging from this alliance is centered around the much-loved movie “The Nightmare Before Christmas.” Known for its exceptional appeal during Halloween as well as being a top contender for many viewers’ favorite Christmas movies, it seems almost astonishing that LEGO hasn’t brought Jack Skellington’s world into their distinctive style sooner. Many fans are thrilled about the upcoming LEGO set, but some expectations run even higher. It’s not unusual for LEGO games to be released following the films that have sets based on them, and “The Nightmare Before Christmas” certainly has the potential to make an exceptional LEGO video game.

The Nightmare Before Christmas is no Stranger to Video Games

Although no official video game version of the film has been produced, The Nightmare Before Christmas has had a significant presence in the interactive realm. In the latter half of the 2000s, approximately nine years post-release of the movie, two games were launched: Oogie’s Revenge on PS2 and Xbox, and The Pumpkin King for the GBA. These games served as sequels to Jack’s storyline and received mixed reviews, ultimately fading into obscurity. Additionally, in 2005, Kingdom Hearts 2 was introduced, which included a world inspired by The Nightmare Before Christmas. Many fans consider Halloween Town in Kingdom Hearts 2 to be one of the game’s best worlds. To this day, enthusiasts continue to hope for a faithful video game adaptation of the movie.

Over the years, Jack Skellington has gained a significant following, making him a frequent choice for Disney crossover video games. He was among the initial characters included in Disney Infinity, Disney’s foray into the toys-to-life game genre, which indicates that Disney believed in his potential to attract new players. Disney continues to include him in their mobile crossover games like Disney Crossy Road and Mirrorverse. More recently, he has been one of the most popular villagers in Disney’s Dreamlight Valley, and even a purchasable skin in Fortnite. Given his presence across various games, it seems only a matter of time before Jack takes center stage.

A New Nightmare Before Christmas Game could give LEGO Disney’s Reputation a Boost

The LEGO games produced by TT Games form a vast collection, encompassing numerous intellectual properties and beloved characters. However, it seems that the LEGO games centered around Disney themes tend to rank low on fans’ preference lists, with exceptions like the LEGO Star Wars and LEGO Marvel games, which can be considered Disney-related due to their acquisition. Additionally, LEGO has also developed games based on two other Disney franchises.

Upon its release, the LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean game was met with some degree of underwhelming reactions, especially considering the sets launched alongside the theme. Despite the films’ potential for action-packed gameplay, the LEGO series isn’t typically recognized for its combat scenes. The latest title, LEGO The Incredibles, garnered slightly more positive reviews but didn’t quite capture fans’ hearts. Many felt that the game could have incorporated more Pixar titles and believed it should have served as a foundation for a stronger LEGO/Disney partnership, leading to even more successful collaborations.

Previously encountering challenges, TT Games once considered creating a grand Disney mashup game featuring iconic characters and films like “Frozen,” “The Jungle Book,” and “The Nightmare Before Christmas.” However, it seems that the development of this game was too complex to pursue simultaneously with “LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.” Now, with LEGO revisiting “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” TT Games could potentially have another opportunity to introduce Jack’s tale into the realm of the LEGO games universe.
