In the unveiling trailer for Lies of P: Overture, it’s mentioned that “it’s been an exceptionally long wait.” Following its release in September 2023, this intriguing game has grown into something truly remarkable with a tantalizing post-credits scene and the announcement of both DLC and a sequel. Time has flown by, and Neowiz only provided hints for Overture through two concept art pieces and a vinyl record track. Fortunately, the wait is nearing its end as Lies of P: Overture now has a release window of Summer 2025, which is slightly later than the previously announced Q1 2025 for the DLC’s launch.
The trailer for the State of Play presentation of ‘Lies of P: Overture’ reveals little about the plot except that it is set in the past, yet the hints given are incredibly intriguing. It appears that players may encounter the true Alidoro, and it will be captivating to observe the start of the Puppet Frenzy massacre during the Belle Epoque era in Krat, a winter-stricken late-19th century city. Notably, ‘Lies of P’ has frequently been compared to FromSoftware’s ‘Bloodborne’, particularly regarding its tone and visual style as a ‘Soulslike’ game in promotional materials before release, and Overture seems to show similarities.
Lies of P: Overture is Taking the Route of Bloodborne’s Old Hunters DLC
In a somewhat loose comparison, the snow-covered landscape of Krat resembles Castle Cainhurst from Bloodborne, but it’s more accurate to say that Overture is set in the past and marketed as a prequel, much like Bloodborne’s DLC, The Old Hunters, delves into past events. It’s understandable that Neowiz maintains they didn’t deliberately mimic Bloodborne, but rather drew inspiration from FromSoftware. However, despite these claims, similarities between the two games persist, possibly benefiting Lies of P as well.
In line with FromSoftware’s pattern in games like Bloodborne and Dark Souls, where the lore is complex and the narrative less focused, Bloodborne continues this trend with its Old Hunters DLC by taking players to Yharnam during the Hunter’s Nightmare. On the other hand, Lies of P stands out as a more story-centric and character-driven game. Given that the Overture chapter of Lies of P is being billed as a way to wrap up the narrative, it seems reasonable to anticipate that any lingering plot points or unresolved questions from the base game may be addressed by traveling back in time to the past in Overture.
Lies of P: Overture’s Shark Monster is Reminiscent of Bloodborne’s Shark-Giants
The trailer for Lies of P: Overture’s State of Play reveals various characters and adversaries you’ll encounter, one of which could be quite memorable. Interestingly, Overture includes a monstrous shark antagonist, although it appears to differ somewhat from the Shark-Giants found in The Old Hunters. To clarify, Shark-Giants are more humanoid in nature compared to the seemingly less humanoid shark enemy in Overture. It’s worth noting that the shark enemy in question could potentially be a boss rather than a common adversary wandering aimlessly.
In the movie “Overture,” the shark seems to have undergone a mutation due to the Petrification Disease from “Lies of P,” as indicated by its bluish crystal-like growths.
The grotesque shark creatures in the DLCs of “Lies of P” and “Bloodborne” share a striking resemblance, suggesting a possible connection. While it’s unconfirmed if the shark creature in “Overture” was directly inspired by Shark-Giants, the Scrapped Watchman from “Lies of P” seems to mirror Darkbeast Paarl from “Bloodborne”. It wouldn’t be surprising if enemies or bosses in the DLC are influenced by other designs from FromSoftware. Despite this potential influence, “Lies of P” has demonstrated that it is more than just a clone of “Bloodborne”, and “Overture” will provide an excellent platform for it to establish itself as one of the elite Souls-like games outside those developed by FromSoftware.
