As a seasoned gamer with years of puzzle-solving and character interaction under my belt, I can confidently say that Life is Strange: Double Exposure has truly outdone itself with its intricate narrative and engaging subquests. The opening chapter left me on the edge of my seat, especially the Back to School Blues scenario where I found myself assisting Gwen Hunter, a fellow employee at Blackwell Academy, in obtaining a precious book from a locked cabinet.

In the initial part of “Life is Strange: Double Exposure,” there’s a potent impact, particularly at the culmination of Chapter 1. This is when the game presents a few secondary tasks or goals to the player.

If you recognize the series, you’d understand that they function like side missions, often granting special rewards such as secret trophies/achievements or unique character encounters.

In Chapter 1, your task involves assisting colleague Gwen Hunter, who works alongside Max, in retrieving a book from a secure cabinet. It’s during this incident that we discover Max has a knack for being like a helpful Golden Retriever.

Fortunately, since these sections move swiftly, we’ve put together a concise manual to help you figure out how to open the cabinet, retrieve the book for Gwen, and potentially earn her favor from the very start of your interaction with her.

Where To Find Gwen

Your initial meeting with Gwen takes place towards the close of Chapter 1, specifically within the ‘Back to School Blues’ situation, as Dr. Yasmin summons you for a consultation with her.

On your way to the Admin building for your meeting with Yasmin, you’ll notice Reggie sitting on a bench to your left, working on the Abraxas Puzzle Box – an additional task you might be able to accomplish if you choose.

Upon entering, have a chat with Vinh for updates regarding Yasmin’s heated work call; fortunately, there’s some spare time before she finishes.

In simpler terms, while you help Vinh by fetching a package from the storage area, it’s Gwen’s distress coming from the library that catches ours.

In this situation, address Gwen Hunter, offering consolation as you both mourn the loss of Safi. During your embrace or moment together, she confides that she requires a book from the cabinet, only to discover that it’s currently locked.

Since Max is always ready to lend a helping hand, you graciously consent to pick the lock to retrieve the book.

How To Get The Book

Now, while we can actually pry open the cabinet’s lock, let’s try a subtle option first.

If you take a look at the book that Gwen asked for in the cabinet, you’ll find the label attached, which incidentally points out that there’s another copy on “shelf number 12” in the library.

From this spot, go to your right side. Near the old clock, on the twelfth shelf, you’ll find an additional copy of the book, as suggested by the label.

Here’s an interesting point: Gwen is after the copy in the cabinet, not just any other, because it’s the “10th Anniversary Edition,” which has exclusive content. Consequently, she declines the extra copy right away.

To obtain the book, make your way to Vinh’s workspace. Just beside Dr. Yasmin’s office entrances, there’s a coffee vending machine equipped with a plastic spoon, which you can use and grab something from it.

Pick up the item, return to Gwen, and observe as Max uses an unconventional method with a spoon to open the lock.)

Helping Gwen doesn’t come with any awards or accolades; it’s simply ensuring Max knows that Gwen’s office doors are always open to her, should she ever need something.
