Life is Strange Reunion: Starting Choices Guide

Life is Strange: Reunion continues Max’s story from Double Exposure, but this time, you’ll have many more choices at the beginning than in previous games, giving you a more personalized experience for her and Chloe’s final adventure.

You can choose between the Bay and Bae storylines, each representing a separate path for Chloe, including a version where she’s estranged from her best friend. This time, your choices also include romantic interests from the previous story, and whether you sided with Safi during the climactic moments of Double Exposure.

If you avoided the first game, a few of these early options might feel confusing when deciding which path to take. However, you’ll be surprised by how much these choices actually affect the rest of your experience. Want a detailed breakdown? This guide explains each starting choice in Life is Strange: Reunion.

What Are the Starting Choices?

Life is Strange: Reunion lets you begin your game in one of five different ways, each focusing on a different relationship. These starting points – called “Max’s Relationships” – are listed on the menu in this order: Amanda Thomas, Chloe Price, Max and Chloe’s relationship, Safi, and Vinh.

Choosing any of these lets you choose from two different ways to format them, based on what you prefer.

Relationships Options
Amanda Thomas Romanced Amanda OR Friends with Amanda
Chloe Price Chloe Died in Arcadia Bay OR Chloe Survived Arcadia Bay
Max and Chloe Romanced Chloe OR Friends with Chloe
Safiya Llewellyn-Fayyad Supported Safi OR Rejected Safi
Vinh Lang Romanced Vinh OR Friends with Vinh

Every Starting Choice Explained

Amanda Thomas

Amanda manages the bar at the Snapping Turtle, close to Caledon University. In the game Life is Strange: Double Exposure, you could become close friends with her, or even develop a romantic relationship. Now, in the new Reunion adventure, how you chose to interact with her will affect the story, and things might feel a little sad or nostalgic.

If you had a romantic relationship with Amanda, Max will mention her past with you early in the game during a conversation with Moses. However, the relationship ultimately ends because of complications, particularly related to Max’s abilities. You’ll also hear Amanda and Chloe discuss Max, or Chloe bring her up to Max, when they talk about dating other people later on.

Like most people in the game, Amanda forgets Max’s heroic deeds because of a convenient plot device – everyone simply loses their memory of him saving them. If you maintain a friendship with her, the story focuses on Max and Amanda being close friends who chat via text message, with not much else happening.

Vinh Lang

Let’s talk about Vinh Lang, also known as Mr. Hotshot Assistant. Similar to Amanda, you have the option to develop a close bond or even a romantic relationship with Vinh in the previous game. However, your initial choices will be very similar to those you had with Amanda, unless you previously romanced Vinh, in which case there are a few differences.

Choosing the romantic path reveals the reasons behind Max and Vinh’s split, including their text message conversations which show how brief their relationship was. You’ll also hear a few hints about it in conversations with Vinh and Chloe, but it won’t significantly change the rest of your game.

Chloe Price

I’m a big fan of the blue-haired character, and that definitely influenced my review. This choice early in Life is Strange: Reunion is particularly important. Plus, if you’re aiming for full completion or the Platinum Trophy, you’ll need to play through the game twice, experiencing both options here.

Okay, so if Chloe dies in Arcadia Bay, it’s like… the Chloe I knew, the one I had that whole adventure with, never really existed in this timeline. The new Chloe, the one I’m hanging out with, will sometimes mention that things feel… off, like she knows something’s different about our history. There are little moments in our conversations where she hints at the fact that she died before, and it’s kinda spooky but also really interesting to see how she reacts to things differently.

Choosing Chloe, the survivor of Arcadia Bay, unlocks scenes where she and Max fondly remember their time together before they grew apart. Their conversations suggest they’ve spent a lot of time together, even after the events that separated them.

Max and Chloe

This is directly related to, or rather, connected with, the previous decision about whether Chloe lives or dies. Let’s focus on the consequences of this connection.

Choosing to befriend Chloe will result in a platonic relationship, meaning any romantic feelings will disappear. It’s fairly straightforward, and I want you to notice the changes in their conversations and personal journal entries yourself. The outcome of whether Chloe lives or dies also affects how this friendship develops.

Finally, choosing the romance path is perfect for fans who want to see Max and Chloe together. The game explores their relationship, whether they get back together or deal with the consequences of not doing so.

It’s not flawless, but this is a really strong portrayal of two people working through forgiveness – forgiving each other, themselves, and trying to fix what went wrong. Because of that, it’s worth considering forgiving DeckNine for the issues with Double Exposure.

Safi

Ultimately, deciding whether to support Safi is a minor detail. Her search for others like herself seems to have been forgotten or changed, and the introduction of Diamond feels disconnected. Because this storyline isn’t really explored, the question of whether or not to support her feels unimportant.

Later in the game Reunion, a scene with Safi presents a choice that affects how your relationship with her develops and eventually decides her ending.

I suggest continuing to support her, though you can choose to disagree with these actions if you prefer. They mostly just make Safi angrier with Max, and also involve some discussion about how Double Exposure ends – which I won’t reveal here.
