On May 23rd, 2025, Disney’s live-action reimagining of Lilo and Stitch premiered in cinemas and proved to be a major success. Over Memorial Day Weekend, it shared the limelight with Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning, attracting large audiences, including fans eager to see this updated version. Similar to the 2002 animated film, the narrative revolves around Lilo Pelekai (played by Maia Kealoha), a Hawaiian orphan who forms a bond with Stitch (Chris Sanders), a delightful blue extraterrestrial. Sydney Elizebeth Agudong plays Lilo’s sister Nani, and Courtney B. Vance portrays CIA agent Cobra Bubbles in this new adaptation. Notably, Tia Carrere, who voiced Nani in the original movie, now lends her voice to a compassionate social worker named Mrs. Kekoa in the remake.

The striking trailer indicated that Disney’s live-action adaptations can be successful. Upon visiting their cinema years after the original release, many viewers realized that one character was missing from the updated Lilo & Stitch. Although some may not concur with this alteration, it proved to be a shrewd decision in the end.

Gantu Is Missing From The Lilo & Stitch Live-Action Movie, And That’s Okay

In my perspective as a movie reviewer, I must share that the much-loved character, Captain Gantu, is noticeably absent in the live-action adaptation of Lilo & Stitch. When I had the opportunity to chat with Dean Fleischer Camp, the film’s director, during an interview for Cinemablend, he shed some light on this decision. He mentioned that they opted to focus on the core story and characters, choosing to reimagine the original in a way that best suited their vision for the live-action remake.

In live action, Gantu turned out to be less effective than expected. We gave it a try, but eventually, we found ourselves compelled to make a different choice.

Camp continued, “And also I do stand by the decision ’cause I feel like a lot of the things that in trying to ground these characters more and tell a story with a little more emotional depth, especially between the sisters, I feel like you have to free up real estate to allow that breathing room to do those things.”

In the reimagined version of “Lilo & Stitch”, one significant alteration lies in replacing Gantu as the antagonist and transforming Jumba into the villain instead. Although it would have been exciting to witness a live-action depiction of Gantu, this decision turned out to be strategically sound. According to Camp, “I saw an opportunity here for [Jumba] to turn into the third act’s villain.” The story of Lilo & Stitch, which centers around family and affection, becomes even more engaging with this plot twist.

It’s fascinating to think about Disney re-releasing their top films in theaters, but the success of Lilo & Stitch demonstrates that they can craft an outstanding live-action remake. One reason why this movie is so captivating and enduring is because they made Dr. Jumba Jookiba the antagonist. Given that Jumba was the scientist who brought Stitch to life, it seems logical to expand his character’s influence in the storyline. Furthermore, having Zach Galifianakis lend his voice to this character adds a delightful touch because of his renowned comedic skills.

Similar to other timeless Disney tales, Lilo & Stitch revolves around themes of good versus evil, healing after loss, and family relationships. Just like those films, it’s reasonable to have a single antagonist as the central focus. Although Gantu was present in the original movie, his exclusion from the live-action remake doesn’t detract significantly from the overall plot. Deciding what elements to retain and which to omit can be challenging when adapting a remake, but in this case, incorporating Gantu might have complicated the storyline too much. This adjustment does not impact the strong bond between Lilo and Stitch or the touching family narrative about Lilo and Nani.

Do Fans Think Gantu Should Have Been Included In Lilo & Stitch?

As a passionate cinephile, I must say that while Disney’s live-action adaptations have sparked diverse reactions among us, the remake of “Lilo & Stitch” was undeniably well-received. On Reddit, many discussions revolved around the character Gantu, with several fans expressing the viewpoint that his exclusion from the film seemed reasonable and perhaps even appropriate. One fan penned:

It’s hard to picture a life-sized Captain Gantu as credible or suitable for families, given his character in the series. Representing him as a large, realistic-looking alien abducting children might not be an effective approach.

In the original version, Gantu’s absence was noticeable. However, in this new movie, Jamba steps into the villain role so convincingly that there’s no gap left by Gantu’s absence. It seems logical why Jamba has taken on the villainous role.

In the live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch, ThoughtWheelz highlighted the “memorable instances of emotional depth and character development”. Despite a few fans wishing for the appearance of Gantu, the film’s remarkable success at the box office is undeniable.
