Over the past few years, there’s been a shift in the video game market, as an increasing number of players are opting for digital editions of newly released games instead of buying their traditional, physical counterparts.

More recently, many companies have been sending out physical game versions containing limited data on the disc, insufficient for running the initial release version of the game.

A recent instance is DOOM: The Dark Ages, which comes with a mere 85MB on the disc. This small amount allows players to access and download the entire game once they’ve purchased it!

In the unveiling of the Nintendo Switch 2, it was disclosed that this new console would lean heavily towards a digital format, whereby numerous physical game cartridges would essentially function as authentication tokens, enabling users to download the corresponding games after validation.

Nonetheless, it appears that Limited Run Games is dedicated to producing genuine physical cartridges. At PAX East 2025, they confirmed that their Switch 2 games would contain all data in physical form.

Limited Run Games is a business specializing in delivering both classic and modern video games in tangible formats, including systems like the PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox.

They’ve disclosed that all future Nintendo Switch 2 games they are developing will come as genuine physical cartridge games, containing all game content on the cartridges themselves. However, exceptions apply to games developed in collaboration with other studios or publishers.

To date, it’s been verified that a variety of games, including Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong: Bananza, and Cyberpunk 2077, will come with the complete game on their physical cartridges (or discs, depending on the platform).
