Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP Developer Pushes Back Against Censorship Claims

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that the recent release of Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP has been quite the rollercoaster ride. Having grown up playing classics like Contra and Metal Gear Solid, I’ve always had a soft spot for games that push boundaries and offer a unique experience.

Recently, the president of Dragami Games, Yoshimi Yasuda, spoke about the controversy surrounding the latest release, Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP, particularly regarding the allegations of censorship. Launched this September, the game brought the 2012 cult favorite zombie hack-and-slash title to contemporary platforms. Players assume the role of cheerleading zombie slayer Juliet Starling, fighting off the undead before they take over her high school on her birthday.

Following a few setbacks, the game “Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP” was eventually launched for Nintendo Switch, PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S platforms on September 12. Additionally, the PS4 and Xbox One versions of “Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP” are slated for release in November as well. Although much-anticipated, there was also a significant amount of apprehension surrounding this game due to the absence of the original creators and the transition from a remake to a remaster. While fans have generally welcomed it, critics’ reviews of “RePOP” are more divided, with many noting alterations in gameplay, bugs, and limited PC customization options.

More recently, Yoshimi Yasuda voiced his concerns on Twitter about several related topics, including what appears to be accusations of censorship. In his post, he expresses frustration over misinformation being spread by influencers and journalists concerning the new RePOP mode in Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP. Yasuda clarifies that he suggested the RePOP mode as a censored version and negotiated to make the original, uncensored mode available instead. He adds that the publisher successfully obtained ESRB’s approval for these specifications, meaning that players are experiencing a uniform version across all platforms without any modification instructions.

Dragami Games Addresses False Censorship Claims and Feedback about Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP

In the fresh update of Lollipop Chainsaw called Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP, one of the exciting additions is the RePOP Mode. This mode transforms the graphic violence into a vibrant pop art aesthetic. The traditional mode maintains the game’s original form as it was launched in 2012, albeit with several modifications following the shift from Unreal Engine 3 to Unreal Engine 5. Similar to the initial game, Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP carries an M rating (Mature) by the ESRB due to its heavy themes of blood, gore, drug references, and intense violence.

Yasuda acknowledged that some players have noticed alterations in the control and overall difficulty of Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP, as Juliet appears to move more slowly and certain gameplay mechanics have been adjusted. He explained this shift is due to the transition from an old physics system to Unreal Engine 5, which required a reconfiguration using the Kawaii Physics plugin because the original setup was incompatible with RePOP. Additionally, fans have expressed disapproval over the substitution of the game’s original licensed music.
