Love, Death + Robots Vol. 4: How Veterans Returned & New Stars Shone

Looking forward to it! On May 15, the fourth volume of “Love, Death + Robots” will debut on Netflix, marking the end of a three-year wait. This Emmy-winning animated series, known for its anthology format, returns with 10 fresh short films that blend science fiction, fantasy, and humor in true “LDR” fashion.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but eagerly anticipate the arrival of Love, Death + Robots Vol. 4. Just like in the previous seasons, this anthology series brings together an incredible array of talent from various studios and directors worldwide. Some are making their debut with the show, while others are esteemed veterans returning for more.

For instance, Patrick Osborne, who won our hearts with “Three Robots: Exit Strategies” in Vol. 3, is back to direct a fascinating new tale titled “Smart Appliances, Stupid Owners.” Similarly, Diego Porral, renowned for his exceptional work on the iconic LDR short “Kill Team Kill,” is now at the helm of “How Zeke Got Religion,” a gripping World War Two narrative about combating Nazis.

To delve deeper into the process behind selecting the right directors for these captivating stories, Game Rant had the privilege to interview series supervising director Jennifer Yuh Nelson, executive producer and series creator Tim Miller, and director Robert Valley.

The Familiar Names Directing Love, Death + Robots Vol. 4

Jennifer Yuh Nelson, the supervising director who is also working on her third short film titled “Spider Rose” for Vol. 4, described the final roster of invited directors as a blend of fresh and well-known faces. When it came to selecting which experienced directors would return, the decision was based on the trust built from observing their capabilities in prior seasons.

In our previous collaborations, we’ve had the pleasure of working with exceptional directors and studios. Given our existing strong connections, it seemed only natural to revisit these partnerships and explore the possibility of creating something even more audacious or innovative together.

Nelson Yuh presented the case of Robert Valley’s third directorial project in the series LDR, specifically the Vol. 4 episode titled “400 Boys,” which was adapted from the short story by Marc Laidlaw. She felt that each of Valley’s LDR shorts were unique, and she had doubts whether this new narrative could be filmed successfully. However, she revealed that the final product created by Valley turned out to be a breathtaking, action-packed interpretation of it.

Valley admitted that “400 Boys” was a difficult episode to handle, but found motivation from live-action movies such as “The Warriors” and “City of God” to deliver the best possible version. He expressed, “I certainly didn’t want to let anyone down.” Additionally, he mentioned that his involvement in Vol. 4 might not have occurred if it weren’t for a serendipitous run-in with executive producer Tim Miller in Vancouver.

He attended an event with us, which eventually led to sharing a drink, marking the first time we were seated directly opposite each other. And he casually mentioned: ‘There’s another season of Love, Death and Robots on the way. Would you be interested in contributing an episode?’ To which I agreed. If our paths hadn’t crossed, I might not have been part of this collection of shorts.

Valley expresses his joy at being back to “Love, Death + Robots” following a gap of four years. On the other hand, Tim Miller himself is set to helm two episodes in season 4, marking him as a director for the fourth time within the series.

How Love, Death + Robots Vol. 4 Selected a Star-Studded Voice Cast

Besides skilled directors, viewers can also anticipate an exceptional voice cast for Volume 4. Previous seasons of Love, Death + Robots​​​​​​ have boasted big names in their credits, and it appears that this trend continues with talents like John Boyega, John Oliver, MrBeast, and others joining the roster. As mentioned by Yuh Nelson, “some of them are Tim’s friends.

Tim Miller credited the impressive cast of Love, Death + Robots Vol. 4 to Ivy Isenberg’s casting accomplishments. Moreover, Miller emphasized the significance of collaborating with talented actors who aren’t only suitable for the role but also attract fans. As he put it, “You’ll find a few big-screen stars in there,” he noted.
