In the anime titled “Sakamoto Days“, Sakamoto maintains a close circle of significant individuals. Among them are his wife, Aoi, and their daughter, Hana. Beyond his family, Sakamoto doesn’t have many companions, but he eventually welcomes Shin into his life following an unforeseen meeting. Eventually, Shin begins working at Sakamoto’s convenience store. Not long after, they cross paths with a young girl named Lu Shaotang.
In Sakamoto Days, much like Shin, Lu Shaotang doesn’t have an ordinary family or background. Instead, she is immersed in a world filled with assassins and violence. It isn’t long before she is rescued by these two men, and eventually, she becomes part of their circle, joining them at Sakamoto’s convenience store. However, her origins remain shrouded in mystery for now.
Lu Shaotang’s Family and Past
Lu’s Ties to the Chinese Mafia
Although Lu Shaotang’s history remains largely shrouded, some information is disclosed regarding the events concerning her and her loved ones. In the second installment, Son Hee and Bacho confide that they were responsible for slaying Lu Shaotang’s parents, as her parents were safeguarding a key providing entrance to the Lu family’s vault. Eager to earn cash, Son Hee and Bacho accept almost any task, eliminating anyone who poses a threat, such as Lu Shaotang and her family members.
What? You’re from a mafia family? The Lu Family? Wait, they’re famous! — Shin
Lu Shaotang’s family holds significant influence within the underworld of China, making them a frequent target for those desiring their wealth. Despite her resolve for vengeance following the loss of her parents, her father urged her to live contentedly and not let revenge consume her life. Details about her family are scarce, but eventually, Shaotang, Sakamoto, and Shin manage to access the Lu family’s safe deposit box. Inside, they discover an assortment of treasures, as well as everyday items like books, CDs, and plush toys. What her father left in the vault for her was a bottle of sake to share when she reaches maturity.
Lu Shaotang Meets Shin and Sakamoto
Shin and Sakamoto Save Her From Assassins
In the second episode of the first season, Lu Shaotang encounters Shin and Sakamoto while fleeing from Danshokai members who wanted the key she possessed to open her family’s vault. Despite being in grave danger, Sakamoto shielded her repeatedly and assisted both her and Shin in evading their pursuers.
My mama and papa, they gave their lives to protect it. — Lu Shaotang
During their hasty retreat, Lu Shaotang reveals she’s from a Mob family, always evading those chasing her for control of a hidden safe. Despite his intent to aid Lu Shaotang further, Sakamoto proposes a bargain: Since she spoiled the buns he got for his household, he requests she prepare some for them once they assist her in overcoming her adversaries. Shortly following this exchange, Son Hee and Bacho return and assault the group, compelling Sakamoto and Shin to aid Lu Shaotang once more.
Why Does Lu Shaotang Join Sakamoto and Shin?
Lu Shaotang Begins Working at the Convenience Store
Following their victory over Son Hee and Bacho, Lu Shaotang, Sakamoto, and Shin grant leniency to Danshokai’s leader, albeit with a few battle scars. They then indulge in meat buns and sake within the Lu family’s secure hideout. The following day, while tending to their duties at the convenience store, Shin encounters Lu Shaotang, now donning an apron, and she discloses that Sakamoto has employed her for baking the meat buns. Shin suggests she doesn’t have to work due to her inherited treasures, but she clarifies her need to continue working as a means of not parting with her possessions.
Where else am I gonna work? He hired me to make meat buns. — Lu Shaotang
Apart from the basic necessity of earning a living, what specifically led Lu Shaotang to join forces with Sakamoto and Shin? Some plausible reasons could be that she felt obliged to them, particularly towards Sakamoto, given they had shielded her from assassins and brought the perpetrators to justice. With little else to offer Sakamoto and Shin in return, Lu Shaotang elects to assist them at the convenience store as a token of gratitude. Moreover, it is highly probable that she shares Shin’s viewpoint regarding Sakamoto. After witnessing his exceptional skills against the assassins, she admires Sakamoto as an inspiration and wishes to learn further from him. As the series progresses and explores each character more thoroughly, we can expect to discover additional insights about Lu Shaotang’s connection with the team.
Sakamoto Days is available to stream on Netflix.
