Key Takeaways
- One Piece‘s fashion has always been a highlight due to funky, unique designs that fit each Straw Hat’s personality.
- Luffy’s outfits in One Piece are even more so iconic, with standout looks including his Egghead Arc Astro Boy-inspired clothes.
- Another memorable outfit is his Corrida Colosseum ‘Lucy’ disguise from the Dressrosa Arc.
As a long-time fan of One Piece, I must say that Luffy’s attires have always been a delightful part of his character development. Each outfit he wears tells a story about where he is and what he’s going through at that moment in the series.
One of the most underappreciated aspects of One Piece is fashion, as author Eiichiro Oda has proved to be very talented at designing different good-looking outfits for his characters to wear, especially considering that the Straw Hat Pirates change clothes in almost every arc.
As the character appearing most frequently, the main protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy, boasts an extensive wardrobe within the world of One Piece. When you factor in the anime, movies, and video games, his clothing collection grows even more impressively. While Luffy might not be the most fashion-forward character, he certainly has a knack for expressing a whimsical sense of style. So, which outfits do fans adore the most?
8 Film: Red (Second Outfit)
He Looks Like The Lead In A Heavy Metal Band
- Worn In: One Piece Film: Red
In many instances outside the main storyline, the Straw Hat Pirates are often seen wearing multiple different outfits. Consistent with this trend, One Piece Film: Red also includes a variety of costumes for Luffy and his crew that appear to be inspired by Heavy Metal music culture – a fitting choice given the significant role music plays in this movie’s narrative. During their intense final battle against Tot Musica, they don these outfits.
Among all these characters I play, Luffy is hands down the coolest: his attire nails the pirate captain and Heavy Metal fan vibe just right. The iconic tricorn hat paired with a leather jacket and a low-cut shirt emblazoned with the Jolly Roger is quite the sight. Unfortunately, as usual, he ends up shedding his clothes bit by bit during the intense battle.
7 Egghead Outfit
Futuristic & Nostalgic At The Same Time
- Worn In: Egghead Arc
In the latest storyline, dubbed as the “Egghead Arc,” we find ourselves on a place known as “Future Island.” Predictably, it’s teeming with fashion from the future. Thanks to one of Vegapunk’s inventions – an automatic dispenser, Luffy gets a stylish upgrade that blends him flawlessly into this locale characterized by its unique blend of retro and futuristic aesthetics.
Red has consistently been his go-to color, making him always stylish in it. Yet, the oversized coat and heavy antigravity boots add to the ensemble, creating an impressive look. In essence, Luffy’s appearance strongly resembles Astro Boy, suggesting a possible tribute to that iconic series known for its genre-defining influence.
6 Original Outfit / Post-Timeskip Outfit
2 Outfits That Defined An Entire Generation Of Anime Fans
- Worn In: East Blue Saga (Original) Return to Saobody & Fish-Man Island (Post Time-Skip)
Whenever anime and manga enthusiasts visualize Monkey D. Luffy, they’ll picture him donning either of his distinctive outfits. It’s understandable given their iconic status. The first outfit, which was predominantly worn during the East Blue Saga, is strikingly simple yet impactful, mirroring Luffy’s unique childlike charm. What’s more, he always exudes an aura of confidence in his signature red attire.
However, even following the time skip, his attire remains easily identifiable and seems like a logical progression from his previous one. This new version features an open vest that showcases the scar on his chest, a memento of his battle with Akainu during Marineford. Additionally, the addition of a yellow sash around his waist, a garment often seen on notable pirates in the One Piece universe, enhances its appeal.
5 Strong World (Third Outfit)
Looking Like A Mafia Boss Who Wants To Rescue His Navigator
- Worn In: One Piece Film: Strong World
The movie “One Piece Film: Strong World” transforms into a thrilling mafia-style action story during its final act. In a heart-pounding sequence, the Straw Hat Pirates storm Shiki’s criminal gathering and swiftly assault his associates to rescue Nami. They all perform admirably in this scenario, but Luffy stands out particularly well.
The black suit, the black coat, and the giant gun make him look extremely intimidating, which is definitely intentional, as at this point Luffy is set on getting his beloved friend back. Underneath his suit, he’s also wearing a beautiful red shirt, which can be seen later during the climactic final clash against Shiki.
4 Enies Lobby Outfit
A Small Change Is Enough To Make It Standout
- Worn In: Enies Lobby Arc
Throughout the storyline, particularly prior to the time jump, Luffy’s attire often consisted of colorful vests and shorts, which suits his simple-witted personality quite nicely. Interestingly, even when he dons outfits that might seem repetitive due to their similarities, they manage to make a striking impression on fans.
During the Enies Lobby Arc, Luffy’s attire serves as an illustration of this phenomenon. The primary distinction lies in the black shorts with larger pockets that he sports instead of the usual ones. This seemingly minor alteration not only enhances his appearance but also transformed it into a legendary ensemble. It is significant because it was worn during his revelation of the Gear 2 technique and throughout his grueling battle against Rob Lucci.
3 Tea Party Outfit
An Elegant But Intimidating Look That Big Mom Will Never Forget
- Worn In: Whole Cake Island Arc
During the Whole Cake Island Storyline, one of Luffy’s captivating outfits originates from the unexpected assault on Big Mom’s Tea Party. Since it’s a grand occasion, Luffy and his companions opt for fancy attire to fit in, and among them, Luffy stands out with the most stylish ensemble.
The vibrant red attire matches his typical style and gives an air of elegance, while the black fedora on his usual sun hat adds a playful finishing touch. Yet, when Luffy squares off against Charlotte Katakuri in the Mirror World, he removes his jacket to unveil a black t-shirt beneath. This is an unusual choice for him, but he manages to make it work, looking incredibly menacing during this fight, particularly when he showcases his new Snake Man metamorphosis.
2 “Lucy” Disguise / Corrida Colosseum Outfit
Works Both As A Funny Disguise And As A Fashionable Outfit
- Worn In: Dressrosa Arc
Luffy struggles with concealment and maintaining a low profile, which is why the disguise he wears at the start of the Dressrossa Arc is so comical. His fake beard and sunglasses are quite amusing, but what really makes it funny is his failure to hide his signature straw hat. Despite this, Luffy eventually adapts to the outfit, as it aligns well with the culture of Dressrosa.
After some time, he discards the false embellishments and casually dons a dark blue shirt adorned with flowers as he confronts Doflamingo in the crucial battle. This outfit is one of his most distinctive, with many fans expressing a desire for a real-life replica due to its stylish appearance. Notably, it was during this battle that Luffy unveiled Gear 4: Boundman for the first time.
1 Raid On Onigashima Outfit
The Attire Of A True Pirate King
- Worn In: Wano Country Arc
Throughout my favorite Wano Country Arc, Luffy donned several stylish ensembles, but it was his final outfit during the Onigashimi Raid that truly became one of his most iconic looks, and for valid reasons. It’s amazing how even minor adjustments can make Luffy’s outfits pop, and this is the epitome of that transformation.
In an enhanced version of his Raid on Onigashima attire, Luffy donned orange shorts, a purple sash, and a significant black coat, which functioned as a cape. This outfit, crucial to the ensemble, marked Luffy’s finest appearance in the series. Wearing this attire, Luffy for the first time embodied the image of a true Pirate King. Given Kaido’s comparison of him to Gol D. Roger, it seems intentional. It’s unfortunate that he shed the coat during his epic clash against Kaido; however, it’s worth noting that this was the outfit he wore when he unleashed his powerful Gear 5 form, making its loss more than compensated for.
