Summary
- Reflecting Foxy’s slow beam with a mirror to land a powerful punch.
- Using water to counter Crocodile’s sand form.
- Creating different modes of Gear 4 for various opponents, combining strength and speed.
The main character of One Piece, Monkey D. Luffy, is an individual who tends to act impulsively rather than pondering first. He’s the kind of person who relies heavily on his gut feelings and fearlessly charges into perilous situations. With a crystal-clear idea of his goals, he chooses companions who can aid him in realizing those dreams.
Occasionally, yet remarkably, Monkey D. Luffy demonstrates his knack for devising ingenious tactics. These tactics not only aid him in vanquishing adversaries but also rescue his team from precarious situations. With this in mind, I’d like to share the most intriguing strategies employed by Luffy within the world of One Piece, listed according to their level of fascination.
7. Using The Mirror Against Foxy
A Simple Yet Effective Counter to the Slow Beam

- Chapter 317
- Episode 219
- Long Ring Long Land Arc
Foxy the Silver-Furred Pirate Fox, leader of the Foxy Pirates crew, isn’t particularly formidable in physical combat. Yet, his Devil Fruit ability can be quite vexing and difficult to counter. Foxy consumed the Slow Slow Fruit, granting him the power to fire a beam that makes anything it strikes move slowly. Since Luffy’s battle strategy depends on swiftness and force, being hit by this beam essentially neutralizes his offensive moves. This is why Foxy frequently lands heavy punches on Luffy.
In the climactic moment of their battle, Foxy unleashes his Slow Beam intending to deliver the decisive strike. However, Luffy had found a mirror during their fight earlier and uses it to deflect the beam right back towards Foxy. It turns out that even Foxy, the wielder of this power, can’t dodge his own Slow Beam. With the beam returning to its source, all that remains for Luffy is a powerful punch squarely aimed at Foxy’s face. The delayed knockback effect of the slow-motion power means the impact lasts much longer than normal, making it seem far more agonizing than it actually is for Foxy.
6. Using Water Against Crocodile
Exploiting the Enemy’s Weakness

- Chapter 199
- Episode 121
- Arabasta Arc
he can change his body into grains of sand. This makes him nearly invulnerable to physical harm because any attempt to attack him would simply pass through the sand. At this stage in the story, Luffy and his team have yet to learn about Haki, so they can only rely on their Rubber-Rubber (Gum-Gum) attacks to try and defeat him.
Luckily, Luffy understands that Crocodile’s sand behaves similarly to regular sand when it meets liquid. With this knowledge, he ensures to carry a barrel of water for their ultimate showdown. This move turns out to be crucial as it helps Luffy counter Crocodile’s abilities, causing him to bleed.
5. Using Wax Gloves To Protect Himself From Magellan
A Decent Protection Against Poison

- Chapter 546
- Episode 449
- Impel Down Arc
Magellan, in charge of the notorious Impel Down prison, possesses an extraordinary ability to create various types of poison. This power serves not just as a potent attack, but also as an impenetrable shield. By coating himself with poison, Magellan can inflict severe pain on anyone who comes into contact with him. In a challenging predicament, Luffy finds himself compelled to engage Magellan in combat if he is to rescue his brother, Ace.
On multiple occasions, Luffy has challenged Magellan since infiltrating Impel Down, but each time, it’s been a loss for the Straw Hat Captain. However, luck is on Luffy’s side as Mr. 3 and his Candle ability are present during their final encounter. Luffy requests Mr. 3 to mold boxing gloves and boots from solidified candles for him. These items shield Luffy’s hands and feet from Magellan’s toxic substances, enabling him to deliver powerful blows to the warden.
4. Using Ricochet Attacks Against Enel
Unpredictable Barrage of Attacks

- Chapter 281
- Episode 183
- Story Arc: Skypiea Arc
Even though electricity from Enel doesn’t affect Luffy due to his rubber body, Enel’s Observation Haki or Mantra still works effectively. This ability lets Enel foresee Luffy’s actions, enabling him to respond perfectly. To keep Enel from sensing his thoughts, Luffy decides to think of nothing specifically.
Although Luffy uses this strategy to dodge Enel’s assaults, he hasn’t been able to inflict significant damage on the self-styled deity. It’s then that Luffy hatches a plan: he begins hurling a barrage of punches at the nearby golden wall. Since the wall reflects his punches in unpredictable directions, they strike everything nearby, including Enel. Because Luffy himself can’t predict where his blows will land, Enel is unable to employ Mantra to foresee the rubber man’s attack. As a result, Luffy successfully knocks Enel off his feet and onto the ground.
3. Stalling For Time Against Katakuri
Retreat and Recharge

- Chapter 885
- Episode 858
- Whole Cake Island Arc
In the Mirror World, I find myself witnessing a prolonged battle between Luffy and Katakuri, Big Mom’s second child, that stretches over roughly ten hours. While Luffy manages to inflict some harm on Katakuri, it’s clear that for the majority of the fight, he is the one taking the brunt of the attacks. Gear 4 appears to be the only technique that gives him any advantage against Katakuri, but even this form has its own time constraints. Luffy understands that once Gear 4 runs out, he won’t be able to employ Haki for a good ten minutes, and without it, he doubts his ability to continue fighting Katakuri.
When Luffy spots a chance to escape, he swiftly exits the battlefield without looking back. To prevent Katakuri from chasing him, Luffy snatches Brulee – the inventor of the Mirror World and Katakuri’s younger sister – and leaps into a nearby mirror, landing in the real world, thus leaving Katakuri behind. He seizes this moment to regain his strength and strategize against Katakuri’s relentless onslaught. It was perhaps his strategic retreat that ultimately led him to overcome Katakuri.
2. Separating Katakuri from the Straw Hat Crew
Fighting the Enemy to Save the Crew

- Chapter 878
- Episode 850
- Whole Cake Island Arc
In a fit of hunger-induced rage, Big Mom pursues Luffy, Nami, Sanji, Jinbe, Pedro, and Carrot, believing they’ve taken her scrumptious wedding cake. The Straw Hat crew scrambles to their vessel, the Thousand Sunny, in an attempt to flee from Big Mom. However, Charlotte Katakuri has already claimed their ship. He secretly entered the Sunny through his sister’s Mirror World and captured both Brook and Chopper in the process.
As soon as Luffy and his fellow Straw Hats leap onto their ship, the Sunny, they engage in a swift fistfight with Katakuri. This brief skirmish reveals to Luffy that Katakuri will not be an easy opponent to conquer. Additionally, Luffy understands that as long as Katakuri remains on board, his crew won’t be able to elude Big Mom’s retribution. With no further delay, Luffy overpowers Katakuri, instructs his team to proceed without him, and then compels Katakuri to dive into the Mirror World with him. Thanks to Luffy’s swift decision-making, the rest of the crew is able to utilize Coup de Burst to escape from Big Mom.
1. Different Versions of Gear 4
Different Modes for Different Occasions
- Chapter 784
- Episode 726
- Dressrosa Arc
From my perspective, it’s clear that well-thought-out approaches yield the best results. That’s why I find Luffy’s most ingenious strategy to be the development of a versatile combat method known as Gear 4. In his standard form, Luffy’s Gum-Gum attacks lack the strength and speed required to face powerful adversaries beyond the Grand Line. As a result, he devised the Gear system. While Gear 2 grants him speed, it falls short in terms of power. On the other hand, Gear 3 boosts his strength, but it’s not as swift. The optimal blend of both aspects is found in Gear 4.
One enhanced aspect of Gear 4 lies in its versatility, as it comes equipped with three distinct modes: Boundman, Tankman, and Snakeman. The primary mode, Boundman, delivers an impressive surge of power. For defensive purposes, there’s the Tankman mode. Lastly, Snakeman, renowned for its swiftness, is said to possess the speed necessary to outrun Katakuri, a character who can utilize Haki to glimpse into the future.
Luffy might seem reckless, always acting first and thinking later, but it requires a great deal of foresight to devise a versatile ability like Gear 4, enabling him to combat various types of adversaries. Occasionally, the leader of the Straw Hat Pirates demonstrates strategic ingenuity.
