As a huge fan of “cute girls with guns,” I was beyond thrilled when Lycoris Recoil graced our screens with its sleek action and charming characters. And now, two years later, we’re getting more! I can hardly contain my excitement as I look forward to these upcoming short films that will give us a peek into the daily lives of our beloved main characters. I mean, who doesn’t want to see Chisato and Takina in action outside of their Lycoris duties?

The modern action series, Lycoris Recoil, created quite a stir upon its release due to its unique blend of style and substance, specifically appealing to fans of “cute girls with guns.” Despite only having 13 episodes, the show left its audience craving more. Now, these devoted viewers are being rewarded with a collection of short films, each focusing on one of the main characters.

2022’s “Lycoris Recoil,” produced by A-1 Pictures under the direction of Shingo Adachi, features the lives of two young women living in a city where skilled females, referred to as “Lycoris,” covertly combat terrorism and uphold peace. After being demoted and relocated to café LycoReco, agent Takina Inoue encounters Chisato Nishikigi, an exceptionally talented operative who reveals to her that being a Lycoris encompasses more than just lethal actions.

What’s New at LycoReco?

Lycoris Recoil Is Back! (Kind Of)

On July 23rd, during a commemoration of the anime’s second anniversary, Adachi revealed that six short films focusing on the everyday lives of the main characters would be unveiled. This announcement follows over a year since the series’ official Twitter/X account confirmed the initiation of a new animated project, providing fans with a clearer picture of what’s to come for this new endeavor.

As a long-time fan of the animated series created by Adachi, I’m thrilled to hear that there are plans for short films in the works! Although we don’t have a release date or specifics about each short’s length or creators yet, I’m excitedly looking forward to seeing what new directors and storyboard artists bring to the table. It’s intriguing that Adachi will be returning in a supervisory role, and I’m particularly interested to see how Imigimuru’s scriptwriting skills, having previously served as the character designer back in 2022, will contribute to these new projects.

When Do These Shorts Take Place?

Lycoris Recoil Is Back! (Kind Of)

This section contains spoilers for Season 1 of Lycoris Recoil.

The first season of “Lycoris Recoil” seemed to be building towards a decisive end. With Chisato’s life ticking away on a clock, and the public revelation of the Lycoris program, it appeared that events were reaching a climax. However, fortunately for Chisato, she was given a replacement artificial heart after the crisis was resolved. Moreover, DA (Direct Attack) managed to create a plausible story to conceal their presence following this incident.

Leaving some loose ends behind and with the promise of reunion for the LycoReco team, the first season paved the way for a potential sequel. Tokyo still has weapons in circulation, and Majima remains at large, implying that Chisato and Takina’s work is far from over. The spin-off series could plausibly take place during or after Season 1.

What Kind of Sequel Are Fans in For?

Lycoris Recoil Is Back! (Kind Of)

Lycoris Recoil‘s continuation by way of six short films sounds reminiscent of another girl-centric action show; 2017’s Princess Principal. After the first season concluded, Studio Actas continued the story via Princess Principal: Crown Handler, a still-ongoing series of hour-long films. The first three out of the eventual six have been released in theaters in Japan over the past four years.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but ponder if the upcoming films for Lycoris Recoil will move the story forward or just offer an enjoyable side tale. After all, their “daily lives” are already brimming with casual violence, so here’s hoping for another dose of the delightful mix of adorable charm and strategic firefights that made the series captivating.

As a long-time fan of anime featuring “cute girls with guns,” I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and nostalgia upon hearing that Lycoris Recoil is not only back but potentially here to stay. Having grown up watching shows like this, I’ve seen the cycle play out time and time again: a new series emerges every few years to captivate us with its unique take on the genre, only for it to eventually fade away, leaving us craving more.

Lycoris Recoil is available to stream on Crunchyroll.
