M-M-Mario? One Of The Most Iconic GameCube Games Ever Hits Switch 2 Next Week

The GameCube had a strong start in 2001 with some technically impressive games. Wave Race: Blue Storm was a really well-made racing game with beautiful water visuals, and Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader made me feel like I was actually in the iconic scenes from the movies – it’s the most immersive Star Wars game I’ve ever played.

While Nintendo had huge successes with Mario games (especially considering Super Mario 64 was released on their previous console), they surprised everyone with Luigi’s Mansion. That game has become a fan favorite, and the original GameCube version is now being re-released as part of the Nintendo Classics series, perfectly timed for a spooky October launch.

Nintendo announced on YouTube that the game will be playable on the Switch 2 starting October 30th, according to Eurogamer. To play it on the new system, you’ll need a Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack subscription – this is how you access GameCube games, which aren’t available on the original Switch. It’s definitely worth playing again!

A Lightly Spooky Horror Classic

I always thought Luigi’s Mansion was more playfully spooky than truly scary, but it really took that classic Mario idea of Boos chasing you when you aren’t looking and just ran with it. But honestly, this game is what made Luigi the lovable, scaredy-cat sidekick we all know and love! Plus, it introduced some amazing characters like Professor E. Gadd, who quickly became a fan favorite. It really helped flesh out the Mario universe!

The game featured a creative and original title that successfully blended familiar series elements with innovative ideas. Instead of Mario’s classic fireballs, players collect the Fire Elemental Medal, letting Luigi shoot fire from his Poltergust when combined with a fire ghost. Similar water and ice medals are also available, adding enjoyable puzzles and keeping the ghost-catching gameplay fresh.

The original Luigi’s Mansion game, where Luigi sets out to rescue Mario from a haunted house he ‘won,’ launched a whole series. The most recent installment, Luigi’s Mansion 3 (2019), has Luigi saving the day at a spooky hotel, and it introduces a fun new character called Gooigi. It’s also one of the most visually impressive games Nintendo has ever made.

Honestly, this series is just in a league of its own when it comes to Nintendo games. It hit me how old I’m getting when I realized the first one is almost 25 years old! If you started playing later on, you need to check out the original. They’re re-releasing it on October 30th, and it’s perfect if you want something spooky but not terrifying.
