Ma 2: How Can Octavia Spencer Be Back?

Spoiler Alert: This article contains for the 2019 movie Ma.

Summary

  • Fans are excited about a potential Ma sequel despite concerns about an ambiguous ending.
  • Questions remain about how Octavia Spencer’s character could return given the original ending.
  • Director Tate Taylor hinted at a Ma 2 storyline involving real estate, leaving fans curious about the character’s fate.

As a devotee of horror films, I eagerly await each new production from Blumhouse, and the 2019 movie “Ma” particularly caught my attention. The film centers around Octavia Spencer’s character, Sue Ann Ellington, also known as “Ma,” who is a solitary woman who hosts parties for local teenagers in her basement. This movie delivers several key aspects that I appreciate in a well-crafted scary tale, including a final girl/young adult protagonist who is intelligent, defiant, and often misjudged, along with numerous unexpected twists.

Blumhouse Productions is known for creating popular horror films such as “Happy Death Day”, “Get Out” and more recently, “Ma”. Over the past few years, “Ma” has gained considerable attention. According to Variety, a sequel to “Ma” has been given the green light, with fans discovering the movie post-release and creating numerous memes around it. Despite my enthusiasm for another stellar performance from Octavia Spencer, I do have one major inquiry.

Blumhouse Is Making Ma 2, But Didn’t Octavia Spencer’s Character Die At The End Of The Original 2019 Horror Movie?

It remains uncertain how Scream 7 will manage to resurrect characters like Stu Macher (Matthew Lillard), and I’m keeping an open mind. However, it seems rather implausible for a character to die only to return to life, especially in a film like Ma that is known for its grounded and realistic approach to horror. In the original movie, Ma lies down in bed with Ben Hawkins’s (Luke Evans) lifeless body, and since her house is on fire, it appears she perishes. So, if Octavia Spencer’s character reappears in Ma 2, it will be intriguing to see how the filmmakers explain this apparent contradiction.

It’s tough to fathom that Ma managed to make it through her home being engulfed in flames, given that she didn’t appear to attempt an escape. I would contend that the ending of Ma is heartrending and indelible. If Ma were to reappear for a sequel, I would have opted for a different finale. Maybe Ma could have exited her house by driving or walking away, implying she was leaving town and beginning anew. Then, the Blumhouse horror sequel could continue from where the initial movie ended.

What are Blumhouse’s 2025 horror movies?

  • Wolf Man (January 17th, 2025)
  • The Woman in the Yard (March 28th, 2025)
  • Drop (April 11th, 2025)
  • M3GAN 2.0 (June 27th, 2025)
  • The Black Phone 2 (October 17th, 2025)
  • Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 (December 5th, 2025)

Typically, it’s safe to assume that a deceased character might reappear in a horror film through flashbacks or as a spirit. However, this doesn’t seem to be the case for Scream 7, but there’s an interesting twist: Since actress Joyce DeWitt is returning to her role of Sue Ann/Ma, it seems possible that she didn’t actually perish at the end of Ma. As long as the story provides a logical reason for this return, I think fans could accept it.

In a different scenario, I’d delight in MA 2 being a prequel, setting the stage several years before the 2019 film unfolded. This shift would significantly enhance the emotional resonance of the finale, providing us with insights into Ma’s life between her turbulent high school years and the events portrayed in the movie. Exploring this gap in her timeline promises to keep us hooked and hungry for more.

Director Tate Taylor Talked About A Ma Sequel In 2021

A while back, film director Tate Taylor hinted at a potential sequel during an interview with Entertainment Weekly. Since Ma doesn’t appear to have died in the movie, but the storyline seems to imply she might have perished in the house fire, Taylor expressed, “I believe Octavia Spencer would be open to it, and that’s why I intentionally left her death unclear!

Taylor mentioned a possible storyline for Ma 2 and said:

I believe that she might have relocated to a different town, while simultaneously hosting open houses in another city. She seems to be involved in real estate, perhaps in the Pacific Northwest region, and I suspect her activities may involve harming people during these open houses… That’s all I’ve managed to piece together so far!

It sounds like I find it entertaining to imagine Ma venturing into real estate, and I genuinely enjoy this concept. As one of my favorite Blumhouse movies that steers clear of supernatural elements, I’m optimistic that Ma 2 will shed light on the enigmatic ending of the initial film. I must admit, I’m intrigued to discover what has become of the complex character over the years.
