After the popular release of the Avatar: The Last Airbender collaboration, Magic: The Gathering is hinting at its next big partnership: Capcom’s Monster Hunter franchise. A cryptic message appeared on the Secret Lair website yesterday – “Hunter Rank Required: ???” – and now, the cards from the official Monster Hunter crossover have been revealed earlier than expected.
Although we haven’t seen pictures of the cards yet, a recent announcement indicated the Secret Lair Superdrop will be available from December 1st at 9:00 AM to December 22nd at 11:59 PM PST, or until all copies are sold. This announcement, which IGN described as “very odd,” has since been removed. The release will be split into four parts – called The Hunt, The Hunters, The Monsters, and The Monster II – and each part will feature reprints of existing Magic: The Gathering cards.
Every MTG X Monster Hunter Crossover Set Announced
The details around the quickly pulled press release for Magic: The Gathering were a bit unclear, but it did reveal what to expect from the upcoming Secret Lair collaboration. It also stated that each of the four separate Secret Lair releases will cost $29.99 for the standard version and $39.99 for the foil version.
With artwork from across the entire Monster Hunter series, spanning from Monster Hunter Freedom 2 to Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, fans will find a lot to enjoy.
The first of four special sets released through Magic: The Gathering’s Secret Lair is called “The Hunt.” It features non-creature spells inspired by the devastating attacks of monsters from the Monster Hunter video game series. Each of the five powerful spells in this set utilizes a different color of magic.
| Original Card | Monster Hunter Art Variant | Game Origin |
|---|---|---|

| Village Rites | Magnamalo and Tobi-Kadachi | Monster Hunter Rise |
| Mizzium Mortars | Yian Garuga | Monster Hunter Generations, Monster Hunter 2 |

Okay, so next we have The Hunters – basically, the player characters from Monster Hunter! They’ve brought five really strong human creature cards, and just like last time, each Hunter has their own special color combination that makes them unique.

Finally, the set features many creatures from throughout the series. While the exact Secret Lair cards included in either “The Monsters” or “The Monsters II” drops weren’t announced, these creature cards have been confirmed:

Monster Hunter Is The Perfect Fit For A Universes Beyond Collab
Having spent a lot of time with Monster Hunter Wilds and other Monster Hunter games, the new collaboration with Magic: The Gathering feels like a perfect match. This Secret Lair set has the potential to be one of the most popular releases of the year.
While some were hoping for a complete new set, this Secret Lair release of reprinted cards is still exciting. The positive response to the Monster Hunter Secret Lair, combined with the success of the Magic: The Gathering and Final Fantasy collaboration, suggests we might see more crossover events in the future.
Considering how often the Monster Hunter series has been collaborating with other games recently – like its unexpected team-up with DOTA 2 and another partnership with the Arknights mobile game – it won’t be surprising if we see future crossovers between Monster Hunter and Magic: The Gathering.
