Even with a packed schedule for Magic: The Gathering as the year closes, Wizards of the Coast has announced another surprise: a new Secret Lair crossover featuring monsters and content from the Monster Hunter series.
Last week, Magic: The Gathering fans spotted hints on the Secret Lair website that suggested a possible collaboration with Monster Hunter. Those fans were right! A Monster Hunter-themed Secret Lair collection will be released on December 1st. While not as large as the previous PlayStation collaboration, it’s still a significant release.
Everything We Know About MTG’s Monster Hunter Secret Lair So Far
The Magic: The Gathering and Monster Hunter collaboration, Secret Lair, will be released in four sets: The Hunt, The Hunters, The Monsters, and The Monster 2. ‘The Hunt’ set focuses on monster attacks, ‘The Hunters’ features the characters who track them down, and the two ‘Monster’ sets showcase a variety of creatures from the Monster Hunter games.
The game’s creatures, characters, and attacks are inspired by the Monster Hunter series, judging by their descriptions. Currently, these descriptions are all we have, as the artwork hasn’t been shown yet. For instance, the Drakuseth, Maw of Flames card will feature Rathalos, a well-known monster from Monster Hunter Generations, and will be one of three cards to do so. Another card, Ziatora, the Incinerator, will showcase Fatalis as it appears in Monster Hunter World: Iceborne.
Honestly, as a fan, I’m not spotting anything directly lifted from Monster Hunter Wilds in this new game, and you know what? Considering how popular Wilds was, that’s probably a good thing. It’s nice to see them going in a fresh direction!
The recent announcement of Magic: The Gathering and Monster Hunter cards was a bit unusual. The cards haven’t been organized by specific set releases yet, so we don’t know exactly which cards will be in each set. While we can guess which cards will be part of ‘The Hunt’ and ‘The Hunters’ sets, it’s still unclear how the ten cards with new artwork will be split between the two Monster Hunter-themed sets.
The Magic: The Gathering and Monster Hunter Secret Lair collection will launch exclusively on the Secret Lair website at 12 pm EST on December 1, 2025. Sets will cost $29.99 for non-foil versions and $39.99 for foil. The collection will be available until 2:59 am EST on December 23, 2025, or while supplies last.
