Magic: the Gathering May Be Bringing Back One of Its Most Powerful Cards Ever

A recent leak hints that Magic: The Gathering will be reintroducing a very powerful card in a fresh way. The popular collectible card game from Wizards of the Coast is having a strong year, with several new sets already released in 2026. In January, Magic: The Gathering revisited a beloved game world with the release of Lorwyn Eclipsed, and in March, Wizards of the Coast launched a new crossover featuring Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The game is also planning another return to a setting that fans love.

In late April, Magic: The Gathering will release Secrets of Strixhaven, its second expansion set this year. This set returns players to the magical Strixhaven school on the plane of Arcavios, and promises to show more of the world beyond the school’s walls. Wizards of the Coast has previewed several strong cards from the main set, as well as the Commanders for the pre-constructed decks. But one new card reveal might be a particularly big surprise for both longtime and new players.

Magic: The Gathering Leaks Powerful New Strixhaven Card

A recent leak from the upcoming Secrets of Strixhaven expansion revealed a new, powerful creature card called Emeritus of Ideation. This Mythic creature costs two blue mana and three generic mana to cast. It flies and has Ward 2, plus a unique ability that puts it into a “prepared” state – a new mechanic for this set. When prepared, the card appears to allow players to cast Ancestral Recall, letting a chosen player draw three cards. Ancestral Recall is a legendary card from Magic: The Gathering‘s early days, considered one of the most powerful cards ever printed as part of the famous “Power Nine.”

The card ‘Emeritus of Ideation’ is generating discussion due to its ability to mimic the effect of ‘Ancestral Recall,’ a famously powerful and rare card. ‘Ancestral Recall’ is on the Reserved List, meaning it will never be reprinted, and many players are wondering if this new card signals that Wizards of the Coast might be considering ways to bring back effects from those restricted cards in the ‘Secrets of Strixhaven’ set. Wizards hasn’t officially commented on the situation, with the full set reveal planned for March 31st.

As a long-time Magic player, I’ve always understood the Reserved List to be pretty firm, but Wizards seems to be finding ways around it. The 30th Anniversary Edition brought back a lot of older cards, which was awesome, though they weren’t allowed in tournaments because of the special card backs. Mark Rosewater, one of the main designers, has also said that just because a card is on the Reserved List doesn’t mean they can’t print alternate versions of it. It’s a tricky situation, but it seems like we might see more of those older cards in some form!

The upcoming Secrets of Strixhaven is just the first of several Magic: The Gathering sets planned for the rest of 2026. After that, Wizards of the Coast will release a special set featuring Marvel Super Heroes in June. Beyond Marvel, Magic will also collaborate with The Hobbit and Star Trek, bringing those worlds into the game. The year will conclude with Reality Fracture, the final set taking place within the Magic universe. Plus, frequent Secret Lair releases will continue to add exciting new cards. Magic fans have a lot to anticipate in the coming months!
