What to Expect From Magic: The Gathering’s Avatar Set in November 2025
How Magic: The Gathering Handles Heroes and Villains from Avatar
A cool aspect of the Avatar set in Magic: The Gathering is how the characters’ card designs show their development throughout the original TV series. Characters like Aang, Katara, and Sokka start with cards using only one or two colors of mana, but their power grows, reflected by cards that use increasingly more colors. Aang is a great example: he begins as a single-color white card (“Aang the Last Airbender”), becomes a three-color card (“Aang at the Crossroads”), and ultimately becomes a powerful, five-color creature with the card “Avatar Aang/Aang, Master of Elements.”
The first card revealed from the new Magic: The Gathering set, Avatar Aang, immediately increased the value of older cards players might use in Commander decks.
A great example of this can be seen with the characters Zuko and Azula from Avatar. There’s a card representing Zuko at the beginning of his story – Zuko, Exiled Prince – where he’s focused on capturing Aang and becoming Fire Lord. As the series progresses, Zuko changes, learning to accept other cultures, make friends, and strive for peace with Aang and his allies. This transformation is reflected in another card, Fire Lord Zuko, which still features his firebending abilities but now allows for more strategic plays in Magic: The Gathering by combining with cards representing his allies and spells cast from exile – something airbending often focuses on.
The new Avatar set features several cards focused on Azula and her storyline. It begins with “Azula, On the Hunt,” a black card that represents her firebending abilities and introduces clue tokens – a new element in the set used by villains to track down Aang and his team. Her arc continues with “Azula, Cunning Usurper” (blue/black) and “Fire Lord Azula” (red/blue/black). Additionally, a lesson card dedicated to Azula returns from the MTG Strixhaven set, but without the “Learn” ability.
The ‘Learn’ ability, found on some cards, lets you either add a lesson card from outside the game to your hand, or discard a card from your hand to draw a new one.
The set features creatures inspired by the world of Avatar, including badgermoles. The ‘ally’ creature type returns with cards that work well together, and Sokka is one of them! His ‘Sokka, Tenacious Tactician’ card boosts ally creatures and creates more ally tokens using the Jeskai color combination (red, white, and blue).
MTG’s New Avatar Mechanics Explained
Wizards of the Coast aimed to translate the unique elemental bending powers from Avatar into compelling abilities within the game, primarily reflected in characters such as Aang, Katara, and Toph. These powers include:
- Waterbend: the most flexible mechanic, much like water itself, and it appears on cards as a generic mana cost to pay for certain abilities to trigger.
- Earthbend: a way to fight using the actual land itself, the element of substance. Turning lands into creatures to attack, block, act as a wall, etc., this is more permanent compared to the other elements.
- Firebend: a way to give players options to spend a lot of mana during combat, such as instant spells or triggered abilities. Fire in Avatar is also about mending and creating.
- Airbend: allows players to exile permanents, which can all be played from exile for a fixed mana cost of 2 generic. This can be used to delay opponents, prevent permanents from being destroyed, or even blink them for additional ETB effects. For example, Appa, Steadfast Guardian, and Aribending Lesson are instant-speed spells to take care of opposing permanents or the user’s.
We’re bringing back sagas – a way to tell multi-part stories and share legends of characters from the past, like The Legend of Kuruk/Avatar Kuruk. This feature was previously seen in the Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty set.
Every Product Confirmed for Magic: The Gathering’s Avatar Set
Similar to other major releases, the Avatar set will feature new cards for players to collect. Unlike typical sets, there won’t be preconstructed Commander decks released with Avatar, but a special product designed specifically for Commander players is planned.
- Commander’s Bundle (including a special version of Arcane Signet, Sol Ring, and Swiftfoot Boots)
- Beginner Box
- Jumpstart Boosters
- Scene Boxes
Magic: The Gathering’s Final Fantasy-themed collector boxes will be released on December 5th, allowing fans to collect both those and the Avatar boxes around the same time.
A special *Avatarthemed Secret Lair Superdrop is coming soon! While not all the cards have been shown yet, we know there will be a set featuring the iconic cabbage merchant from the movie.
