Magic: The Gathering Unveils More Final Fantasy Cards!

As a dedicated fan, here’s my take:

Just a heads-up! The content ahead is brimming with significant spoilers from various Final Fantasy games. A month prior to its official release, Magic: The Gathering unveiled some exciting new character cards as part of their crossover expansion set. Among these new cards are Hildibrand Manderville and Zenos yae Galvus from Final Fantasy 14, not to mention fresh artwork for beloved characters like Tifa, Squall, Kefka, and Sephiroth from the broader Final Fantasy series.

The newest addition to the ongoing storyline of Magic: The Gathering’s Universes Beyond is the “Final Fantasy” series, joining other franchises such as Assassin’s Creed and Lord of the Rings. As the 105th expansion for the widely played tabletop card game, Wizards of the Coast has made this Final Fantasy set compatible with both Standard MTG play and draft game modes. The set includes locations and iconic moments from the main Final Fantasy series, as well as Commander Decks starring characters like Cloud and Y’shtola. Pre-orders for the Final Fantasy set can now be placed on Amazon or at local card stores.

Despite potential changes in stock and prices leading up to the June 13 release of “Final Fantasy”, “Magic: The Gathering” has unveiled supplementary cards for enthusiasts to enjoy in the interim. Notably, characters from “Final Fantasy 14”, Zenos yae Galvus and Hildibrand Manderville, will be incorporated into the upcoming expansion as legendary creature cards. As a beloved character from the detective series of “Final Fantasy 14”, Hildibrand Manderville will also feature a Zombie token creature card that can enter the field once his Adventure effect is activated through two Black Lands.

Magic: The Gathering Will Include More Iconic Final Fantasy Characters

  • Final Fantasy 14 characters Zenos and Hildibrand were revealed as Magic: The Gathering cards.
  • Hildibrand’s card effect brings a Zombie creature token to the battlefield.
  • Zenos is a double-faced card that transforms into Shinryu.
  • Standees featuring Tifa, Kefka, and Squall cards appeared at PAX East.

Regarding Zenos from the Stormblood expansion, the principal adversary is a two-sided creature card that enables the Garlean prince to metamorphose into the legendary dragon Shinryu once he defeats a designated opponent. The special ability of Shinryu, Burning Chains, can be beneficial in the multiplayer Commander format; however, it might lead other players to direct their attacks towards Shinryu and its wielder.

As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled about the recent hints suggesting that Cloud and Sephiroth, iconic characters from Final Fantasy, could be getting legendary variant cards. These tantalizing teasers were subtly showcased during PAX East through standees scattered across the convention. From what I’ve gathered on the r/MagicTCG and r/FinalFantasy forums, it seems that other characters with PAX East stands include Squall, Kefka, and Tifa. I can hardly contain my excitement!

Instead of displaying the usual effects of each card, a teaser for an upcoming “MTG: Final Fantasy” card unveiling event, moderated by Ben Starr (the voice actor of “Final Fantasy 16”), was introduced on Saturday, May 10, at Noon Eastern. As time progresses, we’ll discover which other characters from the “Final Fantasy” universe might be included in the forthcoming “MTG” expansion.
