The latest significant expansion in Magic: The Gathering, Edge of Eternities, followed closely by the hugely successful and popular crossover with Final Fantasy, introduced some enjoyable and sometimes even borderline overpowered cards. Notably, there are two cards from these sets that draw attention for sharing an unusual and similar ability.

Over the years, many of these cards have been noteworthy due to their imposing size and strength, or abilities capable of dealing substantial damage compared to other cards. Cards like the Elder Dragons or the Eldrazi race initially raised quite a few eyebrows when they were introduced.

An additional example is Progenitus from the Conflux set, a powerful creature requiring a total of ten mana across all colors and boasting an unbeatable protection against everything. While some may argue whether such features enhance or hinder the natural rhythm of a duel, these unique designs are less common but certainly add a captivating flair to gameplay. This design philosophy has persisted into the recent collections, where two cards stand out for their potential to inflict massive damage.

The collaboration between Magic: The Gathering and Final Fantasy is causing quite a stir since it hit the market. Not only did it set a new record, earning more than $200 million on its debut day, but the card featuring Vivi Ornitier has become virtually game-dominating in the current meta.

After that, I got my hands on the Edge of Eternities expansion pack, diving deep into a sci-fi universe filled with fresh gameplay elements. The cards in focus are Dawnsire and Sunstar Dreadnought from Edge of Eternities, along with the colossal Jumbo Cactuar from Final Fantasy. These bad boys can dish out damage that’s off the charts, way beyond what typical situations would require.

Dawnsire is an spacecraft reminiscent of those we’ve seen before. Once its first Station level of 10 is attained, Dawnsire inflicts 100 damage to an enemy creature or planeswalker each time its owner attacks. At Station level 20, it transforms into a 20/20 flying artifact with the ability to fly. The effects and artwork conjure images of Star Destroyers from Star Wars, aligning perfectly with the expansion’s essence and theme.

On the “Final Fantasy” front, we have Green’s Jumbo Cactuar, a 1/7 Plant figure that amplifies its attack power up to +9999, mirroring the powerful ten-thousand needles move of creatures in “FF” games. This is an outrageously high boost, as it will undoubtedly overpower any defending creatures numerous times over, except for those with equally resilient defenses.

Although these cards may not be the most effective Magic: The Gathering cards in terms of efficiency, their potential to inflict substantial damage makes them significant, adding an intriguing twist to matches where they could prove useful, even if only situationally.
