Magic: The Gathering’s Spider-Man Collab is Making Waves, But One Superhero Team-Up Can Still Top It

2025 sees Magic: The Gathering partnering with numerous franchises for its Universes Beyond sets. The collaboration with the Final Fantasy series yielded one of the most successful Magic: The Gathering collections ever, and later in the year, fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender can expect a multitude of cards inspired by the series, with only a few previews thus far. However, it’s the upcoming Spider-Man set that has the Magic: The Gathering community buzzing, as numerous new cards have been unveiled recently.

The revealed Spider-Man cards in the MTG collection are intriguing enhancements to the game, fostering exciting combinations for players aiming to construct decks centered on the web-slinger. With numerous renditions of the wall-crawler from various universes at their disposal, players enjoy a wealth of choices to orchestrate these characters working together in combos. Nonetheless, another superhero collaboration could elevate this Magic: The Gathering crossover, and WOTC is already well on its way.

Spider-Man Could Lead to More Deadpool Cards in Magic: The Gathering

MTG Has Many Marvel Collabs

It’s not the first time that Magic: The Gathering has partnered with Marvel; in fact, back in 2024, they released a Secret Lair set featuring characters from Black Panther, Captain America, Iron Man, and X-Men. The X-Men set was further divided into cards themed around Storm and Wolverine.

Initially, it was planned that Spider-Man would be the next Marvel hero to join Magic: The Gathering as a TCG feature. However, another Marvel Secret Lair drop, unveiled on April Fools’ Day 2025, wasn’t a prank – it introduced Deadpool cards instead. Among them was the unique Deadpool, Trading Card, which appears to have Deadpool slicing through the card with his katana using a fourth-wall-breaking effect. As with all Secret Lairs, these cards were released in limited quantities, so new players may not see them again anytime soon. Yet, this doesn’t rule out future appearances for both Deadpool and Spider-Man; the upcoming collaboration could provide the best chance.

Marvel’s Secret Lair set was released on November 4, 2024.

Spider-Man and Deadpool Could Team Up in MTG

From being relatively unknown as a Marvel anti-hero, Deadpool has ascended to become one of their most cherished figures. With numerous appearances in video games and movies, Deadpool’s fame has made him a common name within households. The April Pools’ Day Secret Lair drop was an exciting prize for fans of the character, but this collaboration should not be the end. The upcoming Spider-Man sets promise to attract many newcomers, however, limiting one of Marvel’s most adored characters to a limited release might leave fans wanting more. If any Marvel character is likely to find a way back, it’s Deadpool.

In the Marvel comics, the team-up between Deadpool and Spider-Man is quite entertaining. They both have a similar witty sense and a knack for cracking jokes when faced with danger, but Deadpool’s reckless behavior often clashes with Spider-Man’s moral code, resulting in intriguing exchanges. Building upon the Spider-Man sets from Magic: The Gathering, Wizards of the Coast could consider reintroducing Deadpool, offering players a fresh set of Deadpool cards to incorporate into their Spider-Man game decks.

MTG Has Plenty of Options for Deadpool Variants

The notion that multiple universes could exist has gained prominence lately, as demonstrated by recent Marvel films like “Deadpool” and “Wolverine” incorporating this idea. Furthermore, the collaboration between Spider-Man and “Magic: The Gathering” illustrates the possibility of several versions of a character appearing together in one collection. Consequently, if additional Deadpool cards are produced in future sets, it wouldn’t be out of the question to encounter various iterations of the anti-hero from “Deadpool & Wolverine” and the comics.

In the current Deadpool Magic: The Gathering card series, it’s primarily Wade Wilson who takes center stage, save for the Harmless Offering bonus card that depicts Gwenpool with her hands raised, displaying Jeff the Land Shark. For the upcoming Deadpool cards, while we may still see more Wade-centric cards, there are numerous other Deadpool characters waiting in the wings to shine, such as:

  • Lady Deadpool
  • Venompool
  • Gwenpool

One excellent option for a Deadpool variant in “Magic: The Gathering” could be Lady Deadpool. Compared to Wade, Lady Deadpool demonstrates exceptional combat skills, making her card design more geared towards inflicting damage on opponents or their creatures. Given her recent appearance in “Deadpool & Wolverine” and her popularity among fans as one of the most beloved variants of Deadpool’s character, it seems unlikely that she would be disregarded.

Connecting to Spider-Man, another exciting pick might be Venompool. By merging with the Venom symbiote, Deadpool becomes even more uncontrollable and menacing, which could lead to an engaging Magic: The Gathering card. With Venomized designs still trendy, Marvel Rivals has recently added symbiote skins for their roster in Season 3 Luxury Battle Pass, so a Venompool card could capitalize on the popularity of this type of variant.

As a diehard fan, I can’t help but feel that although Gwenpool graces the Harmless Offering card, it’s high time she had one all her own! Spider-Gwen is raking in cards for upcoming Marvel sets, so why not give another spin on Gwen Stacy the same treatment? After all, Gwenpool’s popularity rivals Deadpool (Wade Wilson), with a unique twist of breaking the fourth wall even more boldly. It’s only fitting that her Magic: The Gathering card mirrors the character’s self-referential and meta nature!

The collaboration between Spider-Man and Magic: The Gathering has the potential to thrill followers of both brands, serving as an excellent motivator for Marvel enthusiasts to venture into the world of Trading Card Games for the first time. Although details about future Marvel-themed sets from Magic: The Gathering have yet to be revealed, this may be an ideal moment to introduce additional Deadpool cards. This partnership could result in exciting team-ups between Deadpool and Spider-Man, as well as offering a variety of fresh character versions, each with distinct abilities that set them apart within the game.
