As someone who’s spent countless hours traversing the vast landscapes of Pokémon games since my childhood, I must admit that the sheer number of legendary Pokémon available to catch has always been a source of excitement for me. From the original 150 back in the 90s to the staggering total of 32 in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, it’s been an incredible journey.
Over time, the world of Pokémon has grown to allow players more varieties of pocket creatures to catch in each main game. The standard Pokémon count has significantly risen, as well as the amount of Legendary ones you can battle and capture.
Initially, in the first “Pokemon” game, only four legendary Pokemon could be found in Red and Blue versions. However, as remakes of different “Pokemon” titles have been released, the number of legends has significantly increased, with nearly every legendary that’s ever appeared now accessible. These are the main “Pokemon” games with the highest number of legendary Pokemon to capture, and here’s a count of how many can be hunted down in each game.
8. Black And White
Total Legendaries To Catch: 10
The Pokemon Black and White series is often ranked among the top primary Pokemon games due to several compelling reasons, despite featuring a collection of 10 legendary Pokemon for capture. Among these, Reshiram and Zekrom have gained significant affection within the franchise.
It should be noted that although there are a total of 10 legendary Pokemon to catch in Pokemon Black and White, Victini, which is one of the first legendaries to be caught, can only be obtained if the player has received the Liberty Pass, which can only be rewarded over Wi-Fi. While the other 9 legendary Pokemon can be caught either way.
7. FireRed And LeafGreen
Total Legendaries To Catch: 10
Originally, the first “Pokemon” game featured just four legendary Pokemon for players to capture. The remake of the 1996 Role-Playing Game, however, expanded this number by incorporating the legendary Pokemon from the main series games that were developed and released between its creation and this remake.
Initially, American players missed out on officially playing Red and Green because they were only available in Japan. In their place, they got Red and Blue instead. Alongside the already familiar Legendaries such as Articuno, Zapdos, and Mewtwo, additional seven legendary Pokémon were introduced for catching, which might have been encountered in games like Gold and Silver or Ruby and Sapphire.
6. Diamond And Pearl
Total Legendaries To Catch: 14
After conquering either Palkia or Dialga in Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, gamers can venture beyond these two legendary creatures. The remaining three legendaries will be scattered throughout the region of Sinnoh. Uxie, Azelf, and Mesprit are charming little Psychic-type Pokemon who possess immense power, yet there are still 9 more legendaries to discover in the game.
In the game of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, while three Pokemon are exclusive to events, there are still six other Pokemon that can be accessed by all players. This is possible if they’ve previously played Pokemon games or acquired the National Pokedex.
5. Black And White 2
Total Legendaries To Catch: 17
In an unusual move for the Pokemon series, Pokemon Black and White 2 is the first time a second official game has been released instead of a remake for a generation, given the positive reception of the original Pokemon Black and White, it’s no wonder that Zekrom and Reshiram make another appearance.
In the game “Pokemon Black and White 2” from 2012, you’ll find an expanded roster of legendary Pokemon to fight and catch – a total of 7 more than in the original release. Notably, each version of the game offers unique legendary Pokemon. While Cobalion, Virizion, and Terrakion remain consistent across both versions, some changes have been made: Landorous has been replaced by Regirock in this updated edition.
4. Platinum
Total Legendaries To Catch: 18
Following the debut of “Pokemon Diamond and Pearl,” the third installment from the fourth generation of Pokemon games was launched exactly two years later. This new game not only featured the legendary Pokemon from the initial fourth-generation versions, but it also introduced four additional legendary Pokemon for players aiming to capture them all.
In this latest Pokemon game, you’ll encounter event-exclusive Pokemon such as Darkrai, Shaymin, and Arceus, which were originally obtained through special Nintendo events that provided specific items to capture these legendary creatures. The exception here is Giratina, who is the only new legendary in this collection.
3. HeartGold And SoulSilver
Total Legendaries To Catch: 19
In the reimagined versions of an earlier Pokemon game, known as HeartGold and SoulSilver, you’ll find not just the 5 legendary Pokemon from the original Gold and Silver but also numerous other legendary creatures from various main series games. These can be captured after defeating the Elite Four and reaching a level that makes it easier to catch them.
In the games HeartGold and SoulSilver, most legendary Pokemon can be caught, but a select few, including Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina, are exclusive to players who transferred the special Arceus received as a commemorative gift for the 12th Pokemon Movie.
2. Brilliant Diamond And Shining Pearl
Total Legendaries To Catch: 31
Ever since the debut of “Pokemon Diamond and Pearl” back in 2006, featuring 14 legendary Pokemon for players to engage in battles and capture, a refreshed version called “Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl” hit the shelves in 2021. This new release serves as a revamp of the cherished generation of Pokemon, while also incorporating additional legendaries drawn from numerous games that were launched between these two titles.
In addition to the introduction of game-altering elements, the availability of 31 iconic Pokemon in this game will encourage players to locate their beloved legendaries from the series, to observe how this new design has transformed them. Similarly to previous installments, the number of legends in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl has expanded significantly due to various events that have incorporated both mythical and legendary Pokemon into the collection.
1. Omega Ruby And Alpha Sapphire
Total Legendaries To Catch: 32
Consequently, it’s clear that the primary Pokemon game offering the greatest number of legendaries is a remake, namely Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. This game stands out because it introduced players to a fresh art style in the Pokemon series. In contrast, the original Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire games only featured 8 legendary Pokemon for interaction, but this remake significantly exceeded that number, boasting a total of 32 legendaries to discover.
In the game of Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, several legendary Pokemon are often captured using the Mirage Spot feature. As you traverse the skies, you might notice stars hovering above certain islands. These starred locations usually hide various legendary Pokemon for the player to catch. However, it’s crucial to keep in mind that some legendaries can only be found at specific times during the day.
