Major Anime Piracy Proxy Website Shuts Down Following Sudden Freeze

Major Anime Piracy Proxy Website Shuts Down Following Sudden Freeze

Summary

  • Major pirate website GoGo Anime froze suddenly, affecting other pirate anime websites.
  • YugenAnime, a GoGo Anime “proxy”, shut down due to financial difficulties and personal issues.
  • Anti-piracy operations in various countries, including Brazil and South Korea, are impacting pirate websites.

As a long-time enthusiast of anime and a devoted user of these pirate websites for years, I must say, this recent turn of events has left me rather disheartened. The sudden freeze of GoGo Anime and the subsequent shutdown of YugenAnime have dealt a significant blow to the community, making it increasingly difficult for fans like myself to keep up with our favorite shows without digging through a labyrinth of less reliable sources.

Recently, the popular pirate site, GoGo Anime, unexpectedly ceased to post fresh content. Some associated pages appear to have been taken down, yet users report they can still access the site. Despite this, it seems to remain operational. As we’ve previously mentioned, numerous unrelated pirated anime sites replicate GoGo Anime (or Anitaku) content, hence the sudden halt affected multiple platforms where numerous individuals enjoy series like “One Piece”.

Many sites claim to be developing unique methods for uploading fresh content, as GoGo Anime/Anitaku continues to be static. Most unauthorized anime streaming sites currently either gather content from other pirated sites or take it directly from legitimate platforms.

This week, it was announced that operators of YugenAnime, a significant GoGo Anime “mirror” site, will be shutting down. In their goodbye message, they cited increasing challenges in running and maintaining such a large website, financial struggles, and personal matters as the reasons for this decision. They further mentioned that YugenAnime was primarily a means for them to grow their skills and conduct experiments, and it wasn’t intended to garner as much attention and publicity as it did.

To summarize, they haven’t stated that they received any legal notices, but it appears that the suspension of Gogo Anime/AniKau has disrupted their operations significantly. Given the numerous anti-piracy actions, it could be that they are now uncertain about discovering new methods to maintain the service running smoothly. Without communication from the operators of GoGo Anime/AniKau, it seems plausible that the website will eventually cease to exist as well.

Recent Anti-piracy Operations Around The World

2021 has proven to be a challenging season for rogue pirate platforms, particularly in Brazil, Indonesia, and the Philippines. In Brazil, Operation 404 – the largest anti-piracy initiative the country has seen – has been ongoing since 2019. This year, the local law enforcement intensified this operation, specifically targeting illegal anime streaming sites during a dedicated phase.

The South Korean administration has become more vigilant against pirated material, as Korean content (k-content) is now gaining a broader audience through international and legitimate platforms. Interpol Special Agent Hong Seong-jin, who worked with the government to shut down websites, recently warned that piracy could potentially bring about the downfall of the Hallyu phenomenon.

In Japan, various businesses formed an alliance known as the Content Overseas Distribution Association (CODA) with the aim of combating piracy. This association now encompasses significant companies like Shueisha, Aniplex, Avex, Kadokawa, Cygames, Shogakukan, Toei, Ghibli, and TV Tokyo. They operate both domestically and globally; for instance, the Brazilian branch received assistance from CODA.

Right holders claim that piracy costs them billions of dollars per year, but that’s a bit hard to measure, because these numbers usually consider how much more they would gain if everyone who is watching illegally turned to legal platforms, which is not how things work when pirate websites shut down. A portion of the public does move to legal platforms, but another portion just looks for other pirated services. Piracy is a multifaceted issue that involves socio-economic, political and even educational factors (a lot of people might not even know they are consuming pirated content, especially younger and older audiences).

GoGo Anime/Anitaku And The Dramacool Chain

As a die-hard fan, I’ve been keeping a close eye on the situation with GoGo Anime/Anitaku. Although it’s still ambiguous who might be behind the freeze (no one has stepped forward to admit responsibility), there have been connections made to Dramacool, an Asian entertainment piracy network that’s currently under intense copyright scrutiny and closing down numerous sites. It’s a chilling reminder of what happened with FMovies earlier this year: they too stopped uploading content suddenly, only to eventually close up shop completely. I sure hope GoGo Anime/Anitaku manages to navigate these choppy waters and continue providing us with our favorite anime content!

Although GoGo Anime doesn’t have an official affiliation with YugenAnime, it appears that YugenAnime content was removed from GoGo Anime (as reported by Everything.moe). This suspension might have been a significant setback for the site administrators.
