As a dedicated fan who has been with Overwatch since its inception, I must say it’s been quite the rollercoaster ride these past years. The Overwatch League implosion and the subsequent Overwatch Champions Series were like chapters in a book I never wanted to put down. Despite the initial dip in viewership, I remained hopeful for the game I love.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve got to say that the past year or so has been a rollercoaster ride for the Overwatch esports community. After the tumultuous events surrounding the Overwatch League, Blizzard managed to pick up the pieces and introduce the Overwatch Champions Series. And guess what? The world final of this exciting series is happening right now at DreamHack Stockholm.
Despite facing difficulties in maintaining popularity since its release in 2022, the shift towards a free-to-play format for Overwatch 2 might be the key to ensuring its longevity.
Lately, Blizzard has unveiled significant updates for the Overwatch League Season 2025 which could rekindle fan interest in the competition.
On The Up
Blizzard aims to breathe new life into the flagging esports community established around their nearly decade-old Overwatch hero shooter series, through the Overwatch Champions Series, a tournament worth $1.3 million.
It’s not going too badly, but it’s a far cry from the game’s peak.
2022 saw the Overwatch League Playoffs reach a record-breaking peak of 397,000 viewers, as reported by EsportsCharts. This number was significantly higher than any viewership recorded in the previous four years. However, so far, the Overwatch Contenders Series (OWCS) has only peaked at 111,500 viewers.
On the contrary, Blizzard remains unyielding. In a recent post on their social media platforms, they’ve announced that significant alterations are imminent for the Overwatch Competitive Scene before the 2025 season kickoff, which includes:
- A streamlined format
- Three stages and three live events
- More broadcasts
- FACEIT as a path in OWCS
- An OWCS team partner program
In a statement, Blizzard wrote:
2025 marks an intensified commitment to the core elements that make OWCS engaging, with a focus on three primary aspects: enhancing the appeal and inclusivity of competitions, simplifying our programs, and boosting accessibility for both players and spectators. We’re equally excited to unveil a fresh OWCS Team Partner initiative. Keep an eye out – the 2025 OWCS Season kicks off in January!
The OWCS 2025 competition is set to unfold from January through November, beginning with the initial regular season games and concluding with the yet-to-be-decided World Finals tournament.
In simple terms, Blizzard announced that by joining their team partnership program, gamers will receive special in-game packs for their favorite Overwatch esports teams. However, these packs won’t be accessible until the latter part of the 2025 Overwatch World Cup Series season. So, you’ll have to exercise a bit more patience before you can cheer on your preferred team with these rewards.
