Makoto Shinkai is currently one of the most well-known Japanese directors for anime. Makoto Shinkai has been a movie writer and director since 1998, creating films such as “5 Centimeters per Second,” “The Garden of Words,” “Your Name,” “Weathering with You” and most recently, “Suzume.” In addition to his original film works, he’s also directed openings and trailers for video games like “The Legend of Heroes III: Song of the Ocean” (1999), “Ys II Eternal” (2000) and “Ef: A Fairy Tale of the Two” (2006).

To this day, his most renowned creation might still be “Your Name” (2016), a film that was incredibly successful commercially in Japan, earning over ¥25.17 billion. At the time, it ranked as the second highest-grossing movie in Japanese cinema history, trailing only Miyazaki’s “Spirited Away.” Today, “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Mugen Train” holds that position. The film also garnered significant international recognition, even from cinema critics – a feat typically challenging for anime movies not produced by Ghibli. However, it did not receive an Oscar nomination.

2019 saw the premiere of “Weathering with You” in Japan, raking in over ¥12 billion at the box office. The movie “Suzume” was unveiled in 2022, earning ¥14.94 billion and attracting significant global attention. Although it ranks as the 11th highest-grossing film of all time in Japan’s box office, “Suzume” sits at the fourth spot among the most successful Japanese films worldwide (following “Mugen Train“, “Your Name“, and “Spirited Away” respectively).
