As an observer, I’m thrilled to share that after a four-year hiatus, the prodigious Mamoru Hosoda, renowned for his masterpiece “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time,” is back with a new film titled “Scarlet.” Set to premiere in Japan this November and North America in December, this upcoming movie has been generating buzz since the release of its teaser trailer on Tuesday. The trailer garnered nearly 100,000 views within just 24 hours on YouTube, a testament to Hosoda’s global appeal. Over the last decade, he’s produced a series of internationally acclaimed films, and with news of this new project, the internet is abuzz with anticipation.
I’m absolutely thrilled to share that today, we’ve got not just a new trailer and release date for Scarlet, but also an English-language poster! Given Makoto Shinkai’s widespread acclaim, his past Oscar nomination, and the simultaneous advertising in Japan and North America, it’s no wonder this movie is creating quite a buzz. With its upcoming major release in both regions and Hosoda’s reputation attached to it, I can’t help but anticipate that it will rake in significant profits not only in Japan but globally as well!
Scarlet by Mamoru Hosoda
The New Story of a Warrior Princess
There’s not much public information available on Scarlet at this time, but The Hollywood Reporter characterizes the movie as…
…the story of a brave princess who transcends time and space.
Comic Natalie goes into more detail, reporting the story as (translated from Japanese),
In a twisted realm known as the “Realm of the Departed,” where insanity reigns supreme, Princess Scarlet, who couldn’t avenge her slain father, the king, finds herself awakening. To avoid fading into oblivion and annihilation, she must confront her sworn adversary, exact vengeance, and make her way to the “Land of the Hidden.” The tale unfolds Scarlett’s relentless odyssey for retribution.
In case you’re pondering the reason for quotation marks around “endless,” it’s because the movie has a more extensive title in Japanese. Instead of just being named Scarlet, Hosoda’s latest production is known as Hateshinaki Scarlet, which translates to “Endless Scarlet.” The name may have been shortened for convenience, although one might speculate if some significance was sacrificed by altering the title when the plot will chronicle her “endless” voyage. Scarlet is set to premiere on November 21st in Japan and December 12th in North America.
The Film Legacy of Mamoru Hosoda
The Mastermind Producing Critically Acclaimed Anime Movies
When considering original anime films, many minds immediately turn to Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki; however, Mamoru Hosoda is often seen as a very close second. He first gained recognition with “Digimon: The Movie” in 2000, but his contributions extend far beyond that. Following the success of “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time” in 2006, Hosoda has produced numerous significant anime films. Among these are “Summer Wars” (2009), “Wolf Children” (2012), “The Boy and the Beast” (2015), and “Mirai” (2018). All works after “Summer Wars” have been produced by his own studio, Studio Chizu.
2018 saw the film “Mirai” nominated for an Academy Award in the category of Best Animated Feature. This marked a first, as it was Japan’s initial non-Studio Ghibli animated production to be recognized in this category. Although it didn’t secure the win, it made history nonetheless. Mamoru Hosoda’s work has proven that one doesn’t have to be Hayao Miyazaki to produce exceptional animated films. Other directors and studios are equally capable of creating masterpieces that resonate globally with audiences.
As an onlooker, it’s evident that “Scarlet” holds a promising future at the box office, with anticipation growing that it will expand its international reach beyond North America as we move closer to December. Given the fact that fans have been starved of Hosoda’s work since “Belle” in 2021, it’s no wonder they are eager and primed for this next tale. The trailer alone has sparked excitement, and I suspect that anticipation will only intensify as we get full-length trailers and more promotional materials in the run-up to “Scarlet”‘s release.
Scarlet, a film by Mamoru Hosoda, will release in theaters in North America on December 12th, 2025.
