A team member from the development studio behind ‘Mandragora: Whispers of the Witch Tree’ recently shared some details about the game’s upcoming features with Game Rant. The game, ‘Mandragora’, is a side-scrolling action role-playing game that combines elements from the Soulslike and Metroidvania genres to provide an expansive gaming experience rooted in medieval folklore. As an Inquisitor, players are on a mission to prevent a parallel world called Entropy from devouring everything, while simultaneously upgrading their character from one of several available playable class styles.
Initially slated for a late 2024 release, the game titled “Mandragora: Whispers of the Witch Tree” was eventually unveiled on April 17, 2025. Prior to this, interested gamers could download a free demo of “Mandragora” from Steam to sample the initial stages of the game. The reception for “Mandragora” has been generally positive, with some critics highlighting its engaging plot, attractive visuals, and diverse gameplay options.
Mandragora Is Adding Permadeath and New Game Plus
After Mandragora has been released and is now available for players, there’s growing curiosity about what updates the developers have in store for the game after its launch. In a recent interview with Game Rant, Primal Game Studio’s Community Marketing Manager Alex Pearson shed some light on these plans. They mentioned at least two upcoming update patches that aim to introduce additional features to the game.
Pearson hasn’t given any specific timing about incorporating these new features into “Mandragora: Whisper of the Witch Tree,” but it’s clear they will improve the gaming experience, especially for fans of Metroidvania and action RPG genres. The New Game Plus mode is likely to enable players to replay Mandragora from the start while retaining their equipment and upgrades from the previous playthrough. On the other hand, permadeath might add an extra layer of intensity by concluding a game once the main character perishes. Pearson explains:
We can’t wait for players to experience our next two content updates! The first update brings Permadeath Mode into the game, while the second one introduces the New Game+ option. Enjoy the new challenges!
For Mandragora: Whispers of the Witch Tree, it’s possible that Primal Game Studio could extend the game’s dark, Elden Ring-esque world with story DLC in the future, but at this point, no official announcements or confirmations have been made beyond the New Game Plus and permadeath updates. Fans are also unsure when these anticipated additions will be implemented. Currently, players can immerse themselves in over 30 hours of gameplay as they navigate through Mandragora’s world, encountering numerous challenging enemies along the way.
