A team member involved in creating the game ‘Mandragora: Whispers of the Witch Tree’ recently disclosed the origin of its medieval tale concept. To be clear, Mandragora is an action RPG that follows a side-scrolling Metroidvania format, where players must save the world from the threat of Entropy, a looming alternate reality, by battling monsters and enhancing their character using one out of six available classes.
Mandragora openly showcases its inspiration from traditional RPGs and side-scrolling Metroidvania games, offering players skill trees that develop through experience and the need to revisit previously traversed areas once new abilities or items have been obtained or unlocked. The game’s environment bears a striking resemblance to dark fantasy titles such as Elden Ring and Dark Souls, complete with copious amounts of blood, filth, and grotesque creatures that serve as obstacles along the journey towards the next objective.
Game Rant recently spoke with Alex Pearson, Community Marketing Manager from Primal Game Studio, about “Mandragora: Whispers of the Witch Tree” after its official launch on April 17th. One of the initial topics covered was the origin of the game’s story and setting. Pearson revealed that the creative minds behind Mandragora drew inspiration for their project from a visit to Ireland in 2016.

Pearson further explained that the narrative of Mandragora underwent numerous revisions before Primal Game Studio settled on the current version players are enjoying. Having Brian Mitsoda, a renowned writer from Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines, as the project’s Narrative Lead was instrumental in this process. From the beginning, elements such as witchcraft, secrets, and corruption were integral to Mandragora’s storyline.
The creative direction of Mandragora was profoundly influenced by the breathtaking landscapes and captivating folktales of Ireland, as well as global mythologies and game elements they found intriguing.
Alex Person shares that it’s been a delightful process to review players’ comments about playing the game “Mandragora: Whispers of the Witch Tree“. Already, certain characters in the game have garnered favor among its fanbase. So far, many players find the story of “Mandragora ” to be a standout due to its straightforwardness and ease of understanding compared to other games in the expanding soulslike genre. The game boasts 60 playable quests, offering rich lore for avid gamers to explore if they’re keen on uncovering all the secrets this dark world holds.
