Marathon Announces Live Nerf to Popular Endgame Weapon

As a big fan of Marathon, I just heard from the game director, Joe Ziegler, that they’re making some changes to the Biotoxic Disinjector. Apparently, it was a little too powerful and they’ve adjusted it on all the live servers. It’s totally normal for games like Marathon – the ones that are always being updated – to need these kinds of balance tweaks as they add new stuff. It just makes sense to keep things fair and fun!

Bungie is continuing its pattern of responding directly to player feedback with Marathon. Like with Destiny 2, Marathon is a live-service game, but it’s taking a slightly different approach. Bungie is quickly testing new ideas – for example, they added a Duos mode just weeks after launch – and are comfortable implementing them directly into the game without requiring a full update. They’re now using these fast updates to make ongoing improvements and changes as needed.

Marathon Makes Live Changes to Biotoxic Disinjector

Joe Ziegler, the game director for Marathon, announced an immediate adjustment to the Biotoxic Disinjector weapon on social media, describing it as “Strong!…too strong.” The weapon was proving too powerful, especially for skilled players who had acquired it. Its grenade function could eliminate opponents in a single hit, bouncing around and sticking to surfaces. On maps like Marathon‘s Cryo Archive, this allowed players to quickly clear rooms without giving opponents a chance to respond. Essentially, the weapon created an imbalance, giving an even greater advantage to the most skilled players who were already winning.

There aren’t detailed patch notes for this update. Ziegler explained the change is a significant, across-the-board reduction of 35% to the weapon’s damage. While this addresses the weapon’s current power, Ziegler noted it might not be a permanent fix, but a quick adjustment to balance it for players who are using it. Interestingly, many players report the weapon feels almost identical after the change. Others have shared ideas for further adjustments, such as increasing grenade ammo cost or adding self-damage when players are too close to explosions.

Usually, changes like these – often called ‘nerfs’ or adjustments – would be released with a scheduled update. But with this weapon, Bungie acted quickly, making changes directly on the live game servers on April 3rd at 6 PM Pacific Time. The reason for this immediate action was a lot of community discussion about how the weapon was creating a significant imbalance, giving players who had it a large advantage over those who didn’t.

The Biotoxic Disinjector is a powerful, endgame weapon introduced in Marathon. It’s a unique trace rifle that can also launch grenades. While you might occasionally find it on defeated players, the most consistent way to get it is by completing the Cryo Archive map, which is only available for a limited time each week. To claim the weapon, players must reach Vault 7 and defeat the Compiler boss. Successfully defeating the boss rewards players with the Biotoxic Disinjector itself, along with the ammo needed to use it.
