Marathon features six different character types, called Shells. Each Shell has special skills and characteristics, and your choice will heavily influence how you play the game. They all feel and play quite differently from each other.
I absolutely love the Assassin class! If you’re the type of player who prefers sneaking around and taking enemies down quietly instead of just charging in like the Destroyer, it’s perfect for you. It’s seriously one of the strongest classes in the game, but it does take some getting used to. It can be a little complicated at first, but once you really understand how it works, you’ll be incredibly powerful, trust me!
Want to master the Assassin class in Marathon? This guide will show you everything you need to know, including its unique skills, effective strategies, and how to build a winning team around it.
Assassin Abilites, Explained

The Assassin excels at stealth, letting you surprise enemies and quickly disengage from fights. When playing as the Assassin in Marathon, opponents need to be careful about their positioning to avoid being flanked and losing control of the match. See below for a full breakdown of the Assassin’s skills.
- Invisibility Systems (Tech): Active Camo and synthetic smoke deployment allow for unseen strikes or the perfect cover during hostile engagements.
- Smoke Screen (Prime): Throw a smoke disc that emits a line of smoke fields in front of you, disrupting the optics of those who step inside.
- Active Camo (Tactical): Activate your shell’s camouflage systems, pulling a shroud of invisibility over yourself. Performing offensive actions, taking damage, and using abilities or consumables briefly disrupts your invisibility.
- Shadow Dive (Trait): Activate while airborne to slam a smoke disc into the ground, deploying a smoke field.
- Shroud (Trait): Your shell automatically activates its camouflage systems when entering any smoke field, making you invisible. Invisibility persists for a short time after leaving the smoke field.
Assassin is a valuable team member thanks to their ability to blend in with camouflage and use smoke to confuse opponents and enemies. To get the most out of Assassin during a game, timing your abilities correctly is key. We’ll cover the best strategies for Assassin in the next section.
Assassin Strategies
To succeed as an Assassin in Marathon, mastering the timing of your Smoke Screen and Active Camo is crucial. Essentially, you need to fight strategically.
The most effective way to use a Smoke Screen is either while reviving a fallen teammate or when you need to quickly escape a fight to get to safety. When a teammate goes down during a battle, enemies will often try to finish them off or stop you from reviving them. A Smoke Screen obscures their vision, giving you the cover you need to safely bring your teammate back into the fight.
You can try to shoot enemies through the smoke, but it’s risky. Remember where they are before you use the Smoke Screen, as it will block your own view too.
If you’re caught in the open with no protection and start getting shot at by the UESC or other players, using Smoke Screen is a good way to quickly create cover and help you and your team escape the line of fire.
Active Camo isn’t just for hiding when you’re spotted; it’s most effective during a fight. My go-to tactic is to duck behind cover, activate the camo, then quickly move around to flank the enemy team. If done well, they’ll assume you’re still behind that cover, while you’re actually circling around to attack them from behind.
Best Team Comp
When playing Marathon, the best Shells to use with the Assassin are Triage and Recon. Triage is essential for any team because it heals and keeps everyone alive. Recon works well with the Assassin’s camouflage and smoke screen abilities.

Triage is a straightforward asset to any team. Their Med-Drones keep your health up, reducing the need for health kits and shield recharges. Plus, their Reboot+ ability makes it simpler for teammates to revive you if you go down.
Recon has a special ability called Echo Pulse that sends out radar, highlighting nearby enemies. This helps the Assassin locate targets while cloaked, which is useful because the camouflage doesn’t last forever. Additionally, if Recon eliminates an enemy with a finishing move, it reveals their entire team’s location to everyone.
