After focusing on the Destiny series since 2014, Bungie has spent the last four years developing its new game, Marathon. Gamers will be able to experience Marathon this spring.
I’m so hyped for the new Marathon! It’s a reboot of that awesome old game from 1994, but it’s not what I expected. Instead of being a single-player adventure where you play as a security officer fighting aliens and solving puzzles, this new version, coming out in 2026, is all about player-versus-player combat in an extraction shooter format. It’s a totally different direction, but I’m really excited to see how it plays!
Following a somewhat positive but mixed response to early multiplayer testing of Marathon, and after concerns arose regarding the use of artwork by Fern “Antireal” Hook without her permission, the game’s release date has been delayed. Originally planned for September 2025, Marathon is now expected to launch sometime this fiscal year.
Okay, so after almost half a year of working on it and letting a small group of us test it out, Bungie is finally planning to launch the new Marathon in March 2026! They’re aiming for a $40 price tag, and honestly, it’s packed with a ton of cool new stuff. I’m super hyped!
The New and Improved Marathon
A recent Bungie video, called “Vision of Marathon,” features developers discussing fan feedback about the gameplay, story, and overall design of Marathon. Technical Director Chris Butcher explained that mastering the game is similar to a high-stakes game of poker, but with guns.
As a big fan, I was a little disappointed to hear that Marathon won’t be coming out in September 2025 as originally planned. But the good news is, it’s still on track to release sometime this year, according to the company’s financial schedule!
The game world will feel more alive thanks to improved physics and visual effects. Water, light, and objects will behave more realistically, and you’ll even see the bodies of defeated enemies linger and decompose over time.
When Marathon launches, players will have access to four large maps: Perimeter, Dire Marsh, Outpost, and Cryo Archive. Each map has its own distinct weather conditions and unpredictable hazards and events that will happen during gameplay.

Marathon will offer a lot of ways to customize your gear, with over 400 modifications available to improve your weapons. Players can also choose from six different factions, each with unique characters (‘Runners’) and ways to upgrade them.
- Arachne
- CyberAcme
- NuCaloric
- Sekiguchi
- Traxus
- MIDA
Okay, so good news for anyone grabbing a Rewards Pass in Marathon – they won’t expire anymore! Plus, everyone gets to jump into Season 1 and check out all the new stuff, like maps and cool new Runner skins. It’s awesome that they’re making everything accessible to all players.
