Marathon Will Not Require Xbox And PC Players To Link Their PSN Account

Summary

  • Sony is learning from past controversies with multiplatform efforts like requiring a PSN account on non-PlayStation platforms.
  • Bungie’s new PvP extraction shooter Marathon will not require a PlayStation Account for PC and Xbox players.
  • Marathon will be a multiplayer-focused live service game available on PC, Xbox, and PS.

It appears that Sony may be adapting from past errors in its cross-platform endeavors, albeit at a gradual pace.

Since its acquisition by Sony in 2022, Bungie is now working on a fresh PvP shooter titled Marathon, a reboot of an earlier series prior to Halo that hasn’t had a new installment since the release of Marathon Infinity back in 1996.

Marathon is set to launch on both PC and Xbox Series X|S together with PS5. A curious player from the game’s official Discord server inquired whether PC and Xbox users would need a PlayStation Network account for play, and Bungie provided a straightforward and concise response (as reported by Eurogamer).

“Marathon will not require a PlayStation Account for players on PC and Xbox.”

Learning From Controversy

It’s understandable that gamers might have concerns when Sony requires a PlayStation Network (PSN) account for games available on non-PlayStation systems, as part of their cross-platform endeavors.

In 2024, a significant dispute arose regarding PSN accounts, specifically concerning Helldivers 2. This happened as Sony required those who owned the game on Steam to connect their PSN account for continued play, a decision made retroactively.

After facing a surge of negative reviews, Sony changed their mind and made the account linking option optional in their other multiplayer games, just a few days later.

So far, we’ve only gotten a glimpse into the new Marathon game, mainly through the unveiling of certain character classes and instances where fans stumbled upon hints in the Steam version or even within the data files for Destiny 2 developed by Bungie.

It appears that we won’t have to wait much longer, as Bungie has scheduled a livestream specifically for the game, revealing gameplay on April 12.

It’s clear that Marathon is shaping up to be a multiplayer-centric PvP shooter with an emphasis on extraction, deviating from the original trilogy which were primarily single-player games but offered strong multiplayer elements. Interestingly, it has weathered the recent wave of cancellations of live service games by Sony and managed to stay afloat despite internal development team scandals.
