Even though Marathon initially received negative reviews, Bungie’s revamped take on the classic shooter seems to be gaining traction. It’s a very different game from Destiny – a unique blend of player-versus-player and player-versus-environment action with an extraction mechanic – which led to some initial hesitation. However, Bungie is committed to improving the game, and players are responding positively to their efforts.

According to Joe Ziegler, the game director of Marathon, Bungie is actively reviewing player feedback and wants to hear more from the community. So far, the main concerns raised involve the Cryo Archive. Players have noted that it’s only accessible on weekends, which is inconvenient, and that the Subroutine discs needed aren’t always guaranteed to drop, which feels frustrating considering the effort it takes to access the mode. Bungie is also considering options for players who want to experience Cryo Archive solo, as it currently requires a full team of three. Ziegler cautioned that finding solutions may take time, but confirmed the team will discuss these issues this week.

It’s tempting to see Ziegler’s statements as simple publicity, but Bungie has actually been actively working to improve Marathon, and they’re clearly listening to player feedback. They seem determined to create a game that truly resonates with its community, which could lead to greater player involvement and continued development. While things are always subject to change, this approach is currently very focused on players and the community.

Despite some negative reviews initially, Marathon quickly received a lot of positive feedback, and many players—thousands, in fact—are still playing on PC. At its peak, over 88,000 people were playing on Steam at the same time, with daily player counts ranging from 15,000 to 50,000. While it’s not yet a massive success that could fully support Bungie, and it didn’t surpass Arc Raiders in popularity, it’s a significant improvement over the poorly received Concord, which is encouraging.
