A recently leaked trailer suggests Bungie’s new game, Marathon, will be released on March 5th for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Marathon is made by the creators of popular games like Destiny and Halo, but it’s faced some challenges. The game was delayed last year after players didn’t react well to an early test version. While some players got to try it out, the feedback wasn’t positive.
I was so excited when Bungie first showed off Marathon at the PlayStation Showcase last year! They announced a September 2025 release date, which felt so far away, but then they surprised us with a closed playtest in April – just five months before launch. Honestly, the reaction from those who got to try it wasn’t great. A lot of us felt like the game needed more work, and we started asking Bungie to delay it. Even though it was a small test group, the number of wishlists on Steam started dropping pretty quickly as fans voiced their concerns and wanted Bungie to take the time to really polish the game and make it something special.
Marathon May Launch March 5
After receiving feedback from players who tested an early version, Bungie announced in June that they were postponing the release of Marathon. They said they would provide an update in the fall, and in December, they confirmed a new release window in March. While Bungie hasn’t given a specific date, a video recently shared on Reddit suggests Marathon will launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on Thursday, March 5, 2026.
Although Bungie hasn’t officially confirmed it, a leaked trailer for the game seems to be genuine. It reportedly came from the Xbox ‘Club’ page and has since been taken down. The trailer suggests a March 5th release date and reveals a Deluxe Edition of Marathon that includes two extra weapons. Pre-orders are expected to become available when the trailer is released, but the official announcement from Bungie is still pending.
We knew the game Marathon was coming in March, but its early March release date was unexpected. Following a delay last year, Sony, the company behind Marathon, had promised a release by March 31, 2026, and described it as a groundbreaking new game. Sony also recognized the mixed reactions from players, admitting feedback has been diverse. Despite this, Sony remains confident and plans to give Marathon the best possible start when it launches, expressing excitement for its arrival.
The development of Marathon faced another challenge in late December when art director Joseph Cross left Bungie. While the reason for his departure wasn’t shared, Bungie stated that Cross expressed pride in the game’s visual design and looks forward to experiencing it as a player with the rest of the community. Cross had been with Bungie since 2011, previously working as a developer on the popular Dead Space series at EA. Fortunately, his departure happened several months before Marathon‘s launch, so the game is expected to be finished and released on schedule.
