As someone who has grown up with the magical world of Nintendo and its iconic characters, I can confidently say that these classic games have been like old friends to me throughout my gaming journey. From the humble beginnings of Donkey Kong, where Mario was just a plumber trying to rescue a damsel in distress (Pauline, if memory serves), to the antagonistic role he took on in Donkey Kong Jr., each game has left an indelible mark on me and countless others.
Hardly in debate, most Mario video games have quickly become timeless classics upon their release, causing numerous Mario games to be adapted for various home gaming consoles and portable devices.
As a dedicated fan, I’ve always appreciated how the legendary Mario series, originally born in the arcades, has found its way onto various platforms outside of Nintendo, thanks to producers like Atari. Moreover, it’s been an absolute joy to discover that some of these timeless Mario games can be played within titles such as Animal Crossing and Donkey Kong 64.

Through two simultaneous launches handled by Camelot Software, the popular sports game themed around Mario characters made its way onto both the Nintendo 64 and the Game Boy Color.
Ever since its debut in 1999, I’ve been relishing the chance to play the classic game, Mario Golf, across various generations of Nintendo consoles – from home systems to handheld devices. More recently, I was thrilled to discover that both the Game Boy Color and Nintendo 64 editions of this beloved title have been re-released on the versatile Nintendo Switch console, thanks to Nintendo’s own Nintendo Switch Online classic game collection.

An Arcade Classic From Mario’s Pre-Mushroom Kingdom Days

Originally, Wrecking Crew was launched in arcades, but it didn’t take long before it found its way onto the NES. Since then, it has appeared on various Nintendo home and portable consoles, thanks to their digital marketplaces. More recently, the NES version of Wrecking Crew can now be played on the Nintendo Switch via their NSO subscription service.

Not Only A Classic Mario Spin-Off But A Quintessential Puzzle Title

Originating from Gunpei Yokoi, inventor of the Game & Watch and Game Boy, this popular falling-block puzzle game series featuring Mario has continued to thrive across various platforms. The latest installment was launched on smartphones as recently as 2019.
First introduced on NES and Game Boy in 1990, Dr. Mario has since been made accessible across various platforms via Nintendo’s digital stores and compilation collections. The Classic NES Series on the Game Boy Advance marked its appearance in the sixth console generation, and it can now be found not just on Wii, WiiU, and 3DS, but also on Nintendo Switch through Nintendo Switch Online service.
7 Super Mario World
An SNES Launch Title Ported To Handhelds And Consoles Alike
Initially debuting as the flagship game for the SNES in 1990, Super Mario World later returned to the platform as one of the titles included in the collection known as Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World.
Ever since then, I’ve seen this game travel quite a bit. It found its way onto the Game Boy Advance thanks to being part of the Mario Advance collection. Nintendo’s online store has always offered Super Mario World, and it even made an appearance on their SNES Mini console. Most recently, it’s been added to the Nintendo Switch via their NSO library.

Arguably The Quintessential 2D Mario Platformer, Available Across Generations
Presenting numerous emblematic elements of the Mario franchise, including the Tanooki suit, a global map, and the Koopalings; the game Super Mario Bros. 3 has been consistently ported to various Nintendo gaming platforms.
First released on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988, Super Mario Bros. 3 was later included in the remastered collection Super Mario All-Stars for the SNES. Nowadays, Nintendo has made it easy to access Super Mario Bros. 3 across all their platforms, including the Wii, Wii U, and the entire family of 3DS systems.

Originally intended as a different sequel for “Super Mario Bros”, the North American and European versions of “Super Mario Bros. 2” have, over time, firmly established themselves as significant parts of the “Mario” series’ chronicles.
The look and feel of “Doki Doki Panic” was first introduced to the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988, later making its way to the SNES. This updated version served as the foundation for the Game Boy Advance port, while the original game has since been made available on Nintendo’s digital storefronts. Notably, “Super Mario Bros. 2” comes pre-installed on Nintendo’s NES Classic plug-and-play system and can also be accessed through Nintendo Switch Online, their digital library of games.

Mario Takes The Enemy Role In This Much-Ported Arcade Sequel
Following directly from its predecessor featuring Mario for the first time, “Donkey Kong”, “Donkey Kong Jr.” introduces Mario as a character taking on an opposing role.
First introduced in arcades back in 1982, Donkey Kong Junior was soon adapted for various Atari platforms, eventually becoming a part of the Nintendo Entertainment System’s home console library. The game has also been secretly integrated into the original Animal Crossing, and can be played using specific Game Boy Advance E-Reader cards. Less known are its appearances on the Nintendo Switch in both its arcade and NES versions.

Mario And Luigi Star In Their Own Title Before They Became ‘Super’
Back in the day, I found myself originating from a humble sidekick role in Donkey Kong, where Mario made his debut. Later on, I stepped into the spotlight as the star of “Mario Bros.”, first gracing the world in the form of an arcade game.
From its introduction in 1983, Mario Bros. has appeared on numerous Nintendo home and handheld consoles, either as a direct transfer or extra feature. In its initial years, however, the game was also adapted for various other systems such as Atari’s home consoles and the ZX Spectrum. The original arcade version can now be enjoyed through the Arcade Archives release on the Nintendo Switch, or via the NES edition in the Nintendo Switch Online digital library.

Originally, the popular video game ‘Donkey Kong’ started out as a thrifty reuse of unsuccessful Radar Scope arcade machines. It is one of Nintendo’s early games and serves as the foundation for the visual style and fundamental gameplay principles that have become synonymous with the Mario series.
First appearing in arcades back in 1981, this game was swiftly adapted for various Atari systems and later found its way onto numerous Nintendo platforms beyond Donkey Kong 64’s ‘Frantic Factory’ level. Additionally, through Animal Crossing’s playable NES option, it can be enjoyed on a wide range of Nintendo consoles.
