As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must admit that I’ve seen quite a few collaborations between the gaming world and fast food giants like McDonald’s. However, none have ever managed to evoke such a sense of nostalgia as the return of Mario Kart toys in their Happy Meals.

Starting this season, Mario Kart toys will return to McDonald’s as part of a fresh Happy Meal deal. Throughout the years, collaborations between Nintendo and McDonald’s have been abundant, ranging from unique Pokemon cards to toys inspired by the upcoming 2023 Super Mario Bros. Movie, which provided an exciting sneak peek of characters like Princess Peach for eager fans. In the summer of 2014, McDonald’s distributed Mario Kart toys modeled after Mario Kart 8 on Wii U.

In 2022, McDonald’s plans to reintroduce a promotion featuring the popular series, “Mario Kart,” under a more inclusive banner representing all games in the Nintendo mascot kart-racing franchise. Compared to its 2014 version, this second round of promotional toys includes a swap – instead of the Mario cap visor toy, customers will receive Toadette riding the Antigravity kart from “Mario Kart 8.” On September 5, 2024, the “Mario Kart” toys will make a comeback at McDonald’s, but initially only for Australia.

Currently, McDonald’s has introduced another promotion tied to the popular game, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, as announced on their official website. The new collection of toys largely features characters similar to those in previous sets, including plastic figurines of Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong, Toad, Toadette, Bowser, Princess Peach, and Yoshi. However, there are two fresh additions to collect: a Gold Mario and a Rose Gold Princess Peach.

In the newest collaboration between Mario Kart and McDonald’s, there have been some modifications. Unlike previous editions where Yoshi and Peach rode motorcycles, this new line-up features them in standard Mario Kart go-karts. On the other hand, Bowser and Donkey Kong, well-known Mario antagonists, are now given more substantial figures to reflect their towering sizes. What’s more, these action figures can interchange chassis, enabling fans to customize vehicles for characters like allowing Luigi to use his Antigravity setup, for instance.

With this latest addition, McDonald’s enthusiasts will find even more reason to frequent the restaurant regularly and gather each freshly introduced Mario Kart toy figure. Regarding the games these toys are inspired by, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has recently undergone an update to rectify numerous technical issues. In the meantime, Nintendo and LEGO have teamed up to unveil a series of six Mario Kart building sets for release in 2025. These sets will include buildable characters such as Donkey Kong, Baby Mario, Toad’s garage, and a standard Grand Prix course, among others.
