Not only did Mario Kart 8 become the best-selling game on the Wii U, it also holds the top spot on the Nintendo Switch, surpassing Animal Crossing: New Horizons by a staggering 20 million copies. Given this success, it’s understandable that Nintendo is eager to replicate it from the outset with the Nintendo Switch 2. Intriguingly, the initial teaser for the Switch 2 showcased approximately 20 seconds of what appeared to be a new Mario Kart installment, suggesting a scale that surpasses any previous entry in the series.
The long-anticipated broadcast for the Nintendo Switch 2 has now taken place, and during it, the debut of “Mario Kart” – officially known as “Mario Kart: World” – was one of the initial reveals. This fresh installment boasts larger circuits, along with the confirmation of multiplayer races involving 24 participants. The upcoming “Mario Kart: World” is set to introduce a host of innovative features to the series.
Every Mario Kart World Feature Confirmed During the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct
Drive “Virtually Everywhere”
In the trailer for the new Mario Kart game exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2, players can look forward to the ability to “traverse virtually any terrain.” This implies that they’ll soon have the freedom to jump, slide along rails, and even drive on walls for a short while. While navigating rail tracks, gamers will also be able to perform tricks, which might grant them ongoing speed boosts.
A World-Spanning Track List
In “Mario Kart World”, the title’s signature element is truly shining. The core gameplay revolves around seven Grand Prix cups, with each cup featuring four distinct tracks. Interestingly, every track within “Mario Kart World” is set in a unique location, some of which share the same real-world inspired setting. When engaging in the Grand Prix mode of “Mario Kart World”, players race through the consecutive tracks of a cup without any interruptions from loading screens as each track seamlessly blends into the next one.
In the Knockout Tour of Mario Kart World, competitors will journey from one extreme to the other. This mode involves racing on six tracks in succession. At the conclusion of each track, participants will pass through a gate marked with a number. If a player’s position is lower than the gate number, they will be disqualified from the race altogether.
Free Roam
In addition to the latest update, “Mario Kart World” now offers an expansive Free Exploration mode. In this setting, players are given unrestricted access to traverse the entire game landscape and all tracks. Whether playing solo or collaboratively, adventurers can freely navigate diverse environments, uncovering hidden shortcuts useful during races and discovering delightful secrets scattered throughout the world. Moreover, it appears that this Free Exploration mode incorporates a Photo Mode feature as well.
On April 17th, I’m thrilled to learn even more about the exciting world of Mario Kart, as it will be showcased in a special Nintendo Direct event, all for us fans!
Increased Character Customization
In the unveiling trailer for Mario Kart World, viewers notice that characters like Mario, Luigi, Bowser, and Peach eat sandwiches which subsequently alter their attire. It remains undecided whether these costumes will only serve an aesthetic purpose or impact gameplay in some way. Furthermore, it is uncertain if the character customization is limited to using specific items or if players can change outfits prior to a race.
Dynamic Time of Day and Weather Effects
The video demo for Mario Kart World displayed varying day and weather conditions that, based on the narration in the trailer, could alter the “mood” of a track. It remains to be seen whether these features will influence gameplay mechanics, like rain potentially making steering more challenging.
