As a seasoned gamer who has journeyed through countless virtual worlds and traversed the Mushroom Kingdom more times than I can count, I must say that Mario & Luigi: Brothership is shaping up to be an absolute gem for Nintendo Switch fans. The visuals are stunningly beautiful, with the perfect blend of cel-shading and 3D artwork that makes the Mushroom Kingdom feel more alive than ever before.
In the vast universe of Mario games, the Mario & Luigi series has consistently stood out for its engaging narrative, intelligent character dynamics, and role-playing elements. These qualities have earned it recognition as a worthy successor to Super Mario RPG and a companion to Paper Mario.
Since Paper Jam, no major installment in the series has emerged, but the recent stellar remakes of Super Paper Mario and Mario RPG demonstrate that there’s still room for these Mushroom Kingdom explorations featuring our heroic plumbers. After playing Mario & Luigi: Brothership, I can confidently say it seems to be a strong comeback to their classic adventure style.
The game “Mario & Luigi: Brothership” on Nintendo Switch showcases some of the most visually appealing, traditionally Nintendo-style games yet, blending cel-shading and stunning 3D artwork. The animation is top-notch. As promised, this game emphasizes the strongest bond between Mario and Luigi ever portrayed, which is evident in their interactions throughout the game – holding hands, shoulders embraced, and even transforming into an adorable flying saucer to glide across the map.
Stepping into the world of Brothership, I find myself captivated by its unique features, even beyond our shared bond. The game’s title sets the stage for a remarkable adventure: a colossal, seafaring island-vessel is our home as we sail the vast oceans of Concordia. Navigating our course on an expansive map screen, I launch my fellow brothers from powerful cannons to conquer new islands that lie ahead in our journey.
The underlying concept of Brothership appears to revolve around power outlets and electricity. Nintendo is known for introducing charming characters effortlessly, and Snoutlet is one such addition to this hall of fame. He’s a stylish pink piggy bank with a snout that looks like a Japanese type-A power plug. Contrary to his appearance, he insists he isn’t a pig. Other inhabitants you encounter in Concordia share similar electric outlet characteristics. There’s also a nod to the unique way they communicate. It’s quite entertaining, with everyone communicating in a peculiar jumbled fashion, somewhat reminiscent of Midna’s speech from Hyrule years ago.
As I traverse through this vibrant world, I come across luminescent orbs of energy that serve as my building blocks for creating unique Plugs – think of them as my personalized badges reminiscent of classic Mario RPGs. These Plugs can be activated during combat to unleash a plethora of abilities. However, they have a finite charge and will eventually run out, but don’t worry! I can craft new ones between battles. The more types I create, the more options I unlock for my future adventures.
Exploring around Concordia’s islands feels instinctive and entertaining since you can mix and match Mario and Luigi to overcome challenges and team up to solve intricate puzzles. During my gameplay, I experienced two distinct parts: one that was about an hour into the game, which offered a solid introduction to the fundamental mechanics; then a later section where more advanced features came into play, such as the utilization of plugs and the execution of powerful combined moves by the brothers in combat.
I have always been a sucker for timing-based, heavily involved combat in a role playing game, and Mario & Luigi: Brothership may have the most hands-on reactive battle system ever put into a Mario title. You control both of the heroes at the same time and have to use different button commands for each, using timing to execute dodges and carry out attacks. It is quite tricky in the early stages as the pair are quite underpowered and some of the enemies encountered take a fair bit of damage to put to rest. Once you have levelled up and unlocked more of what the game has to offer, combat becomes an immensely fun experience. The buffs you can use make a real difference without unbalancing things; some of the enemies are still tough and learning their attack patterns is a challenge. I cannot wait to really get stuck in to this one, as I get the impression that what we saw was only the tip of an enormous iceberg with a huge number of islands, characters to interact with, and ways that the different archipelagos can be interlinked and tinkered with.
As a devoted fan, I can’t wait to dive into Mario & Luigi: Brothership! While its vibrant visuals might seem like a kids’ game at first glance, the level of challenge and intricate mechanics hidden beneath are truly remarkable. It’s shaping up to be one of the finest installments in the series yet, offering endless fun as I sail around Concordia alongside two of gaming’s most cherished and timeless characters.
Mario & Luigi: Brothership is coming to Nintendo Switch on November 7th.
