As a lifelong Marvel fan who grew up devouring every comic book and movie release, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming title, Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra. The prospect of seeing Wakanda being drawn into the tumultuous backdrop of World War 2 is not just intriguing but downright exhilarating.
Amy Hennig, the producer, recently revealed some fresh concept art and details about the upcoming superhero action game Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra. She provided a sneak peek at its portrayal of Wakanda, which was first unveiled to players in September 2022 during the D23 Expo. A full trailer for this title was later showcased at the Game Developers Conference 2024 in March. Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is set against the World War 2 era, where Captain America teams up with the Black Panther of that time to thwart the rise of the terrorist group known as Hydra and prevent them from conquering the world.
At this year’s GDC, it was disclosed that Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is not only present but also unveiled its voice cast and additional storyline details. Notably, Khary Payton, a veteran from DC Comics, will be lending his voice to Azzuri/Black Panther, while Drew Moerlein, known for his role in Red Dead Redemption 2, will take on the role of Captain America. In Marvel 1943, there will be two additional playable characters supporting the main heroes – Gabriel Jones from the Howling Commandos assisting Captain America and Nanali, a Wakandan spy, working alongside Black Panther to expose a Hydra plot in WW2 Paris. As depicted in the Marvel 1943 story trailer, these heroes initially clash before joining forces to save the world.
In a fresh interview with Entertainment Weekly, Amy Hennings revealed additional details about the setting and plot of Marvel’s 1943: Rise of Hydra. One intriguing tidbit was a sneak peek at their interpretation of Wakanda, which, according to Hennings, remains largely hidden from the world during this era. The concept art she shared depicted a lush jungle that guards this futuristic African nation. Hennings hinted that Marvel 1943 will delve into how Wakanda becomes embroiled in World War 2, eventually leading to its exposure within the broader Marvel universe.
Marvel 1943 Concept Art Provides Glimpse of Wakanda
Amy Henning explained how the setting of Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra enabled her and the Skydance team to express their affection for World War II-inspired action films, as well as draw on her previous work in the Uncharted series. This led to a narrative brimming with unexpected plot developments. She also points out that the game delves into a less familiar version of Steve Rogers, who hasn’t yet become the iconic Captain America from the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies and other games. Moreover, it tells the tale of Azzuri, a character more recognized by gamers as the Black Panther’s grandfather.
Previously, in July, it became known that Skydance Games and PLAION (previously owned by Embracer Group) would team up to publish the game “Marvel 1943.” This partnership is intriguing because both companies are independent entities working on a top-tier game from a well-known franchise. At this moment, there’s no specific launch date for “Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra” beyond the projected release window of 2025.
