As a longtime fan of Wolverine, I must say that the new film “Deadpool and Wolverine” has truly brought the iconic character to life in a refreshingly unique way. The writers have done an exceptional job in portraying Logan’s weary spirit and biting wit, which resonates deeply with me as someone who has seen his fair share of battles and hardships in life.
Given the widespread acclaim for superhero movies today, it might seem surprising to think they were once dismissed as unserious. However, this began to shift with the release of the first X-Men film in 2000. This movie was not only well-made but also stayed faithful to its comic book roots while telling a unique story. Moreover, one of the most memorable superhero performances ever occurred in this film, introducing Hugh Jackman’s iconic portrayal of Wolverine.
Hugh Jackman has truly breathed life into the character of Wolverine, with top-notch writing to back him up. Unlike other characters who tend to be stoic and reserved, when Wolverine speaks, he doesn’t beat around the bush. Of all the superheroes in film, Logan stands out for his memorable lines – some witty, others harsh, many poignant. This collection showcases some of his finest moments, drawn from his most impactful appearances on the big screen.
10 “I Come With You, I’m Coming For Blood. No Law. No Code Of Conduct. You Point Me In The Right Direction, You Get The Hell Out Of My Way.”
X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)
The movie “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” isn’t the fan favorite X-Men film due to several reasons. The film deviated from established storylines and made debatable choices, such as stitching shut Deadpool’s mouth and equipping him with laser vision. However, it did manage to get a few things right. One of those was its portrayal of Wolverine and his enduring feud with Sabretooth.
The film digs into their brotherly relationship and how Sabertooth, aka Victor Creed, killed Wolverine’s lover, Kayla Silverfox. When Stryker offers Wolverine a chance to go after his old enemy (and get an Adamantium skeleton in the process), Logan accepts, but gives this iconic warning. The gloves are off, and he’ll indulge his most brutal instincts in going after Sabertooth.
9 “What They Did To Me, What I Am, Can’t Be Undone.”
The Wolverine (2013)
- Release: 2013
- Director: James Mangold
- Genre: Action
In simpler terms, the second standalone movie starring Logan, titled “The Wolverine“, was generally well-liked by critics and audiences alike. Compared to its predecessor, it faced fewer criticisms, eventually becoming one of the highest-earning X-Men films. The movie delved deep into what makes Wolverine such a complex hero with emotional baggage, exploring his struggles from years of combat.
When he meets up with Yashida again, who he had previously saved during the Nagasaki bombing in 1945, it becomes evident. His former associate proposes a cure for Logan, whose health is deteriorating due to past events. However, Logan harbors no trust towards others. It’s not only about the experiments that altered his body, like the Adamantium skeleton; rather, the horrors he has endured cannot be reversed.
8 “You Picked The Wrong House, Bub.”
X2: X-Men United (2003)
- Release: 2003
- Director: Bryan Singer
- Genre: Action
Wolverine often gives the impression that he prioritizes himself over teamwork, yet a significant portion of his on-screen appearances involves safeguarding others. An impressive demonstration occurs in X2, where he’s tasked with guarding Professor Xavier’s school while the other X-Men converse with imprisoned Magneto. Though Logan may come across as rough around the edges, he fiercely defends those under his care, which are essentially his family.
William Stryker’s group discovers the harsh reality when they show up at the school with plans to kidnap some of the young students. However, Wolverine clarifies that they are at the wrong residence, and in response, he brutally attacks them with his claws. This scene underscores that Wolverine has a tender heart towards those he is responsible for, and it demonstrates his unwavering confidence in his skills and his determination to safeguard those he cherishes.
7 “Go F*** Yourself.”
X-Men: First Class (2011)
- Release: 2011
- Director: Matthew Vaughn
- Genre: Action
It’s hard to imagine anyone else playing a live-action Wolverine other than Jackman. The actor has owned the role for over two decades and has given some amazing performances as Wolverine. Impressively, one of his best was a one-line cameo in a bar.
In X-Men: First Class, a young Professor X and Magneto try recruiting a reluctant Wolverine for their budding group of outcasts. However, instead of agreeing, Wolverine bluntly expresses his disinterest in joining them. This humorous exchange underscores that Wolverine isn’t yet willing to commit to a team and doesn’t want to be controlled by others anymore.
6 “We Lost Scott. We Lost The Professor. If We Don’t Fight Now, Everything They Stood For Will Die With Them.”
X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)
- Release: 2006
- Director: Brett Ratner
- Genre: Action
The original X-Men film series was one of the best superhero movie series ever, but the third installment was one of its weakest. Not only did it try to conclude the long-running Magneto storyline, but it also featured a power struggle within the X-Men after Xavier’s death and tried to cram in the famous Pheonix storyline. That’s a lot of plates to keep spinning.
Wolverine maintains peak strength throughout the film. Since there are no other options available, he assumes command of what remains of the X-Men. This portrayal showcases Logan at his most heroic, proving himself as the team leader comic enthusiasts have long anticipated. Despite some dissatisfaction with the movie, this particular scene gave me goosebumps.
5 “You’re A D***.”
X-Men
- Release: 2000
- Director: Matthew Vaughn
- Genre: Action
Wolverine shows great directness. The first X-Men movie needed to swiftly establish numerous characters and their personalities without slowing down the pace. It wasn’t an easy feat, but Vaughn managed to capture Wolverine’s attitude and his bond with Cyclops in just three words.
Despite sharing many friendships, Wolverine and Cyclops (Scott Summers), have never been pals. They can collaborate effectively, though their characters often contradict. At a certain juncture, the X-Men grow suspicious that Mystique might be hiding among them, prompting Scott to challenge Wolverine to prove he’s not an imposter. In true Wolverine fashion, Logan demonstrates his authenticity in a humorous manner. This moment is one of the funniest instances in a serious film, and Scott’s acceptance indicates a deep understanding between the two.
4 “Bad Sh** Happens To People I Care About.”
Logan (2017)
- Release: 2017
- Director: James Mangold
- Genre: Action
Among the finest R-rated superhero movies ever produced, “Logan” is rich with memorable Wolverine dialogues. This movie offered viewers a unique portrayal of Wolverine – a weary man who has suffered immense loss and is physically and mentally deteriorating. Such a depiction of a superhero was unprecedented in film.
It is heartbreaking to witness Logan, who lost those dear to him, fearing the same fate for X-23, Laura. He implores her to escape and stay safe, but she refuses. What’s tragic is that Wolverine blames himself for the demise of those he fought so fiercely to protect.
3 “So… This Is What It Feels Like.”
Logan (2017)
- Release: 2017
- Director: James Mangold
- Genre: Action
From the get-go in “Logan”, it was evident that the main character’s days were numbered. Yet, the movie’s bittersweet conclusion still managed to tug at my heartstrings. The aging Logan’s healing factor, a trait he had relied on for so long, seemed to fail him due to years of Adamantium poisoning. Each event in the film seemed to chip away at the once invincible hero, making his fate all the more poignant.
After the movie’s concluding fight, a gravely wounded Logan shares heartfelt counsel with Laura. Having endured decades of combat and hardship, Logan is now prepared to meet his end. The scene was deeply moving and a type of finale seldom found in superhero films. Despite Deadpool and Wolverine resurrecting everyone’s beloved mutant, it cannot detract from the fact that Logan left us with a fitting farewell.
2 “No Wonder The Avengers Didn’t Take You. Or The X-Men, And They’ll Take Anyone.”
Deadpool And Wolverine (2024)
- Release: 2024
- Director: Shawn Levy
- Genre: Action, Comedy
Given the high regard in which Logan‘s finale is held, it was important for Deadpool and Wolverine to establish that the Wolverine in this movie is a unique version rather than a direct continuation. While both characters share similarities such as sadness and self-pity, this film’s Wolverine has a distinct tragic past. This differentiation allows this Wolverine to reference elements of the Marvel Universe that the original Wolverine might not be aware of.
In the movie, I found myself laughing along with Wolverine as he takes Deadpool to task. Yet, it turns out that one of his jabs struck a nerve – Deadpool is always yearning for a team to belong to. Unknowingly, Logan poked a tender spot with a witty remark that was both amusing and hurtful. Despite being the “merc with a mouth,” Wolverine can be quite the insensitive jerk sometimes. This scene perfectly showcases the complex dynamics between these two characters, and it’s one of my favorite moments from the film, as it touches upon Deadpool’s struggle to find his place among heroes.
1 “It’s One Of God’s Best Jokes You Can’t Die, Except That’s On All Of Us.”
Deadpool And Wolverine (2024)
- Release: 2024
- Director: Shawn Levy
- Genre: Action, Comedy
In the movie, Deadpool and Wolverine frequently engage in verbal sparring, leading to an intense showdown when Logan pushes Deadpool’s limits. Logan mistakenly believes that he can speak freely without triggering Deadpool, who has a habit of retaliating.
In this scene from “Deadpool and Wolverine,” we find a deeply frustrated Logan, pushed to the brink by Deadpool. This pivotal moment signals the beginning of the end for their constant squabbling. Despite their frequent arguments throughout the film, it’s following the battle that this line sets off a change in their dynamic, leading them to eventually team up. In this movie, Logan lets loose with his uncensored language, and this particular line exemplifies him at his most blunt and unkind.
