Summary
- Marvel heroes often lose their powers due to various reasons, like overuse or magical dependency.
- Depowered heroes must adapt and find new ways to be heroes with the support of family and resources.
- Loss of powers can lead to character development, change in dynamics, and even passing the mantle to others.
As a passionate cinephile immersed in the realm of comic books, I can attest that nothing stays eternal in this dynamic universe. The Marvel universe is a perpetually evolving tapestry where even the most iconic characters meet their demise and resurface again. The poignant departures of our favorite Avengers often serve as temporary goodbyes rather than final farewells. Yet, it’s not just death that threatens these heroes; their lives are also marked by an array of challenges that could potentially alter the course of their heroic journeys.
Many Marvel superheroes often find themselves powerless due to various reasons such as overexertion during battles against formidable foes, personal issues like family strife, or having their powers sapped. However, these heroic figures typically regain their abilities and, true to their nature, never let temporary powerlessness deter them. In creating this list, we focused on instances where the heroes lost their powers entirely, rather than mere weakening.
1. Franklin Richards
Pushed Himself Too Hard And Paid The Price

Previously, Franklin Richards was among the mightiest entities across Marvel’s universe. As an Omega-level mutant, he possessed the ability to alter reality itself, which he employed in assisting the reconstruction of the Multiverse following the Secret Wars in 2015.
Over time, engaging in these activities severely weakened Franklin, leaving him increasingly frail. In this debilitated condition, he encountered Griever at the End of All Things and later fought against a formidable entity named Cormoran. These experiences drained Franklin completely of his powers. Initially, he found it difficult to cope with this new reality, but soon discovered that with the support of his family (and their substantial resources), he could continue being a hero.
2. Captain Britain
Takes Getting Homesick To A Whole New Level

Captain Britain’s abilities have seen several changes over time and can vary depending on the author. Generally, his powers are rooted in magic and stem from a nexus located around the British Isles. In certain stories, he requires his suit to channel these powers effectively, acting as a hero or possessing the Amulet of Right.
Captain Britain’s abilities are influenced by his self-belief; if his confidence wanes, he can effectively lose most of his powers. Interestingly, leaving Britain itself isn’t always a surefire way to lose his powers, but it can have that effect. For instance, during the Inferno event, Captain Britain traveled to America to aid his comrades, only to lose his suit en route. Stripped of his powers, he didn’t regain them until he temporarily used Captain Marshall’s suit during the Cross-Time Caper storyline. If Henry Cavill were to portray him in the MCU, they would need to clarify some of these complexities.
3. Iron Fist
Never Lend Your Friends Anything, Especially Your Powers

Beyond being an accomplished martial artist, Danny Rand, known as Iron Fist, carries the mystical abilities bestowed upon him by the dragon Shou-Lao, making him the Invincible Iron Fist. Regrettably, these powers have the potential to deplete, rendering Danny devoid of power.
In the “Iron Fist: Heart of the Dragon” series, Danny temporarily bestowed his powers upon Okoye as they confronted the villain Hierophant. Despite not being one of Marvel’s most formidable adversaries, Hierophant initially overpowered both Danny and Okoye. However, with Danny’s powers and the strength of other dragons’ Chi, Okoye was able to vanquish the enemy and his horde of zombie ninjas. Unfortunately for Danny, he subsequently handed the Iron Fist powers to a young dragon named Gork, leaving him powerless. Since then, he has been focusing on training the new Iron Fist. Fortunately, he remains wealthy and continues to assist other heroes financially.
4. Quicksilver
Lost His Powers Along With Most Mutants

In the “House of M” comic book series, Quicksilver proposed a plan to his sister, Scarlet Witch (a potent magic-wielder in the Marvel Universe), suggesting she manipulate reality so that mutants would rule supreme. However, this idea had disastrous consequences when she said “no more mutants,” effectively stripping away powers from most mutants.
Quicksilver may not fit the classic definition of a mutant, but he experienced a power loss just like others. He contemplated giving up for some time, but chose instead to seek redemption and help his kin. He turned to the Inhumans who introduced him to Terrigen Crystals, which he used to rejuvenate other mutants’ powers and gain time-altering abilities (which he eventually lost while trying to set things right).
5. Captain America
Without His Powers, Steve Really Shows His Age

On numerous occasions, Steve Rogers has found himself without his extraordinary abilities, yet he never dwells on his loss for too long. In the 2014 issue #21 of Captain America (Vol. 7), Steve’s super-soldier serum was drained by the lesser-known villain Iron Nail. This not only stripped Steve of his powers, but it also aged him to a ripe 90 years old. Consequently, Steve passed on the Captain America mantle to Sam Wilson, although he still took charge of the Avengers.
Previously, Captain America had experienced power loss incidents before. In the 1978 issue #225 of Captain America (Vol. 1), his powers vanished during a memory-revealing treatment. Similarly, in the “Streets of Poison” storyline from issues #372 to #378 in 1990, he temporarily lost his powers after coming into contact with a drug that counteracted the supersoldier serum. However, Steve Rogers’ courage as one of the Avengers never wavers; even without his powers, he demonstrates that heroism is not contingent upon them.
6. Ms. Marvel/Captain Marvel
An Early Run-In With Rogue Was Disastrous

Carol Danvers, also known as Ms. Marvel and Captain Marvel, seems to have had more than her fair share of hardships and mistreatment within the Marvel universe. The 1980s, in particular, were a challenging time for her. This era started with her being manipulated and becoming pregnant by Marcus Immortus, only to be taken to Limbo while the Avengers looked on impotently. Unfortunately, her struggles continued from that point.
In the year 1981, during the Avengers Annual comic, Carol Danvers was assaulted by an immature Rogue, who happened to be a member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants at that time. Caught up in the moment, Rogue not only stripped Carol of her abilities entirely but also erased her memories. However, Rogue retained Carol’s powers for herself. Xavier was able to restore Carol’s consciousness in Avengers Annual #10, but neither her memories nor powers were returned at that time. Later on, Carol underwent experimentation by the Brood (an extraterrestrial species) and gained Cosmic powers, transforming into Binary. Over the years, these powers dwindled, leaving Carol powerless for parts of the 1990s. It wasn’t until a decade later that she gradually regained her abilities, reclaiming the title of Ms. Marvel in 2006 and eventually becoming Captain Marvel.
7. Thor
Odin Is A Difficult Father To Keep Happy

On certain occasions, Thor has found himself unable to use Mjölnir because he felt “unworthy,” but today we’ll discuss the unusual instances where he lost all of his powers entirely. Interestingly, these occurrences were both initiated by his father, Odin. In his youth, Thor was a headstrong and cocky deity who often found himself in trouble. To instill a lesson in his son, Odin cast a spell on Thor, stripping him of his powers, memories, and creating the Donald Blake identity instead.
As a dedicated film enthusiast, let me recount my personal narrative: I’m Blake, a doctor with a troublesome leg and an unrequited affection for my nurse, Jane Foster. My life took an extraordinary turn in 1962 when I stumbled upon a mystical cane that transformed me into the mighty Thor in the comic book, Journey Into Mystery #83. It wasn’t until much later that Odin, my father, unveiled the secret of my alter ego, Donald Blake.
In a subsequent issue, Journey Into Mystery #103–104, Odin stripped me of my powers after I defied his wishes and pursued a bond with a mortal, Jane. However, my father’s disapproval didn’t last long. By the end of issue #104, he had relented, restoring my powers once more.
8. Storm
An Unfortunate Victim Of Friendly Fire

In the 1980s, a figure working for the National Security Council, Henry Peter Gyrich, ordered the mutant Forge to construct a device capable of stripping mutants of their powers. His intention was to disable Rogue, who had infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D.’s helicarrier as depicted in Uncanny X-Men #182. This event underscored the vulnerability of even those revered as divine, showing that they too could lose everything.
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, let me rephrase that comic book event: In the epic tale of X-Men #185, Gyrich and his team trailed Rogue. With a gun aimed at her, Gyrich was about to pull the trigger, but Forge, in a moment of compassion, intercepted the bullet. Tragically, it struck Storm, stripping her of her powers entirely. This phase saw a romantic entanglement between Storm and Forge until she pieced things together, realizing that the weapon’s architect was none other than the one who had drained her abilities. For several years, Storm bravely led the X-Men without her powers before, in an unexpected twist, regaining them in Uncanny X-Men #226–227 during the Fall of Mutants saga, following a mark by the Adversary.
